Senior Lawyer (Grade 9/10) – Salary Range: $129,464 – $142,665 a.p. + superannuation – Employment: 2 ongoing full‐time roles – Location: Haymarket, Sydney

Position

Senior Lawyer x 2 – Grade 9/10, Information and Privacy Commission NSW (IPC)

Responsibilities

* Provide legal advice to the Information Commissioner and Privacy Commissioner on information access and privacy matters.
* Contribute to the development of case law on access to government information and privacy.
* Represent the Commissioners, primarily at the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT).
* Draft documents including advice, submissions, briefing notes and correspondence.
* Undertake litigation, including representation at courts and tribunals.
* Identify and report on emerging and significant legal issues that may impact the IPC.
* Develop and provide guidance or training material to educate and build legal awareness among internal and external stakeholders.
* Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

* Appropriate tertiary qualifications and admitted as a legal practitioner in NSW.
* Current practising certificate, or eligibility to hold one.
* An interest in privacy and/or access to government information issues.
* Well‐developed research, analytical and problem‐solving skills.
* Demonstrated experience providing high quality legal advice on complex matters.
* Ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly and concisely.
* Willingness to develop or acquire advocacy skills.
* Ability to collaborate as part of a team of legal and non‐legal professionals.
* Commitment to acting in accordance with the highest standards of integrity and professional conduct.

About the role

We are looking for two Senior Lawyers to join our small and dynamic team on either an ongoing basis or secondment (6–12 months). As a Senior Lawyer you will provide legal advice and legislative subject matter expertise to support the Information Commissioner and the Privacy Commissioner in the exercise of their statutory functions, and represent them primarily at the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT). The Commissioners are responsible for overseeing the privacy and information access rights enshrined in the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998, Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002, and Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009. Reporting to the Director, Regulatory Advice & General Counsel, you will be at the forefront of giving effect to the IPC's vision that privacy and access to government information rights are valued and protected in NSW.

You will be comfortable managing competing priorities, interpreting and applying legislation, and working with multiple stakeholders to ensure the delivery of quality outcomes within tight timeframes.
