The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

What Will You Do?

Deliver culturally appropriate legal advice and representation in the high-performing Care & Protection/Family Law Practice. This hands-on role involves advocacy, mentoring, and stakeholder engagement to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients with professionalism and cultural integrity.

Each day you can expect to:

* Provide high-quality, culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to Aboriginal clients, including court appearances and preparing briefs for counsel.
* Manage a busy and diverse caseload while maintaining up-to-date knowledge of Family Law, legal developments, and court procedures.
* Communicate effectively with Aboriginal clients, particularly in complex or sensitive matters, and support clients through difficult legal processes.
* Liaise with external stakeholders and develop interagency relationships, ensuring professional conduct and collaboration across legal and law enforcement sectors.
* Mentor and supervise junior solicitors, assist in workload allocation, and support ethical decision-making within the legal team.
* Maintain professional standards, including accurate file management, use of legal systems/technology, ongoing legal training, and travel to regional areas as required.

Who Are We Looking For?

A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate:

* Legally qualified with a current Practising Certificate and at least 2 years of court advocacy experience in the relevant area of law.
* Strong understanding of Aboriginal cultural and social needs, with a commitment to culturally safe service delivery and the principles of social justice.
* Expert knowledge of relevant legal areas and court procedures, particularly within the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA).
* Proven ability to deliver high-quality legal representation, supported by excellent written and verbal communication, legal research, and problem-solving skills.
* Highly organised and self-motivated, able to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively in a team.
* Willingness and capacity to travel to regional, metro, and interstate locations as required.

Why Join Us?

At ALS, you can discover a fulfilling career that truly makes an impact in the community. We also offer our staff a range of generous benefits including:

* Not-for-profit salary packaging to reduce your tax burden, which means you get to keep more of your hard-earned money in your pocket
* Annual leave loading of 17.5%, ensuring that you are rewarded for your time off and can enjoy a well-deserved break.
* Career and professional development opportunities

At ALS, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of safe recruitment practices. Therefore, it is essential that candidates either possess or have the capacity to obtain a current and valid Working with Children (NSW) or Working with Vulnerable People (ACT) check for this role.

We are focused to providing equal opportunities to all candidates. If you identify as a person with a disability and need any adjustments or support with your application including throughout the recruitment process, please let us know by reaching out to our Talent Team
