The Impact Youll Make
The Impact Youll Make SBSW provides free haircuts, without judgement, to people experiencing homelessness, financial hardship, and social isolation. Beyond haircuts, we create moments of dignity, confidence, and meaningful human connection. As a Hairdresser or Barber volunteer, your contribution directly supports people to feel seen, respected, and empowered. A haircut may seem small, but it can have a profound impact on someone's self-esteem, helping them take steps toward work, housing, or simply feeling valued.
In this role, you will
* Provide haircuts, trims, and grooming for people facing tough times
* Use your skills to restore confidence and wellbeing
* Work alongside an experienced volunteer buddy during your first session
* Participate in induction and online training to feel supported from day one
* Bring warmth, care, and professionalism to every interaction
* Your work will create direct, positive impact for individuals while contributing to a welcoming and compassionate community
What Makes You a Great Fit
* Qualified hairdresser or barber with confidence in scissors and clippers (apprentices with supervision welcome)
* Comfortable trimming beards and moustaches
* Confident with a range of hairstyles (barbering fades and lines are a bonus)
* Compassionate, approachable, and community-minded
* Flexible, reliable, and able to commit around 2 hours per month
* Previous volunteer experience is helpful but not essential. What matters most is your alignment with our values, reliability, and dedication to supporting people with dignity and respect
* SBSW is proudly inclusive and welcomes volunteers of all backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences
What Commitment Looks Like
Volunteering is flexible, with sessions around 2 hours per month. Consistency helps us maintain a supportive environment for our volunteers and ensures that community members continue to receive high-quality care. We have services running various days of the week.
Time Required
A few hours every month (days depend on volunteer and service providers availability).
Training
Training includes an induction session, online training modules, and a buddy shift so you can learn alongside an experienced volunteer. All training is practical and supportive, helping you feel confident before volunteering.
