As we build our new venue, we are looking for an experienced Safety Advisor to take responsibility for achieving and maintaining high standards of occupational health and safety (OHS) across Nyaal Banyul, the Geelong Convention and Event Centre, part of the Victorian Convention and Event Trust (VCET).

This role plays a vital part in providing a safe and compliant environment for employees, contractors, clients and visitors, supporting the successful delivery of world-class events. The position supports contractor compliance monitoring, emergency preparedness implementation, and assists with occupational health and safety systems in accordance with ISO45001 standards. It ensures all risk mitigation measures, legislative obligations, safety certifications and event-specific safety needs are met, while supporting a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement across the business. It also coordinates, facilitates, monitors and influences work-related injuries and return to work plans for work and non-work-related injuries.
The role may be required to work outside of usual operational hours, based on the risk of an event, including availability for some weekend and evening work. This position has a high contact requirement on site.
The role will be required to work in Melbourne initially for training and whilst the venue is under construction. Once open, the role will be a Geelong based role with some travel to Melbourne required for training and meetings.

About the Role
Support the implementation and maintenance of VCET's OHS Management System in alignment with ISO45001 standards
Assist in monitoring compliance with OHS legislation, codes of practice, and Australian standards
Develop and maintain a good working relationship with appropriate statutory authorities, industry bodies, clients, and conduct site inspections as required
Carry out incident investigations and hazard identification processes, implementing corrective actions as directed
Assist with OHS induction and training program delivery for staff, contractors, and event organisers
Chair the OH&S Committee, ensuring as a minimum, meetings are held bi-monthly
Support the maintenance of the Event Security Matrix and Security Operations Manual, including annual reviews
Deliver comprehensive event briefings and support event security with compilation of security briefings
Assist with rehabilitation and return to work processes for injured workers in collaboration with the People & Culture team
Establish and maintain contact with the injured worker to encourage them to actively participate in the development of the rehabilitation program.
Oversee contractor management, including conducting audits and inspections of high-risk work areas and operational activities that can cause illness and injury and ensure the performance and effectiveness of relevant operational controls

About you
Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Public Safety or related discipline
Formal qualification in Return to Work, High Risk Work and Risk Mitigation
Demonstrated experience in occupational health and safety within complex operational environments
Strong understanding of OHS legislation and safety management systems (e.g., ISO45001)
Experience in emergency management, incident investigation and hazard identification
Proven contract management skills and familiarity with security contractor performance management
Extensive experience working engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders at all levels demonstrating strong communication skills.
Knowledge and understanding of Workcover processes and investigation
Strong decision-making ability under pressure
