Job Description

The opportunity:

* Our client is a federal government agency seeking an EL1 level Digital Accessibility Specialist to join their team.
* Hobart location plus hybrid work-from-home.
* 12 month initial contract + 12 month extension, fully negotiable rates.
* Role only open to Australian Citizens.

The role:

* As an EL1 Digital Accessibility Specialist, your role will be focused on the research, design, and development phases of the product lifecycle.
* Your main focus will be on accessible digital product design and development.
* Developing prototypes of screens and components using web technologies to evaluate and demonstrate design concepts and accessibility support.
* Supporting user researchers, developers, and designers in creating world-class accessible digital products and systems across all phases of the product lifecycle.
* Reviewing prototypes with designers to identify content and visual design-related accessibility issues early in development.
* Providing high-quality, accurate, and timely advice on user behavior, digital accessibility, and assistive technologies to stakeholders.
* Contributing to usability testing with people with disabilities, including NDIA staff and NDIS participants.
* Advocating for accessibility-first digital product and system design throughout the Agency.
* Leading accessibility-related design and development work, collaborating with analysts, product owners, developers, testers, and project managers across multiple projects.
* Maintaining documentation, processes, and decisions to support knowledge transfer and future improvements.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

* Significant experience working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality accessibility outputs.
* Knowledge of ARIA, WAI documentation, and how ARIA can be used in complex UI design and development.
* A detailed understanding of WCAG guidelines, their interpretation, limitations, and application.
* Understanding of how people with disabilities use digital products, including familiarity with assistive technologies such as screen readers, magnifiers, speech-to-text, and accessibility features.
* Knowledge of interaction and content design principles, industry trends, and web technologies like browsers, system architectures, and assistive tech.
* A passion for inclusive design and a collaborative approach to communicating accessibility requirements.
* Basic skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or related front-end frameworks/libraries.
* Strong attention to detail and ability to deliver high-quality outputs under pressure.
* Excellent communication skills to present complex ideas clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences.
