**Who we are**
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals. These goals are to:

- maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it,
- protect the Antarctic environment,
- understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system,
- undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.

The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard and McDonald Islands.

The Assets and Infrastructure Branch provides and maintains the equipment and infrastructure to support the Australian Antarctic Program. This ranges from maintenance of existing assets through to developing or procuring new assets and capability.

The Construction Projects Section is a key element of the A&IB and is responsible for the management, maintenance and engineering development of the built infrastructure at Australia's Antarctic and sub-Antarctic stations. The section consists of an expeditioner workforce that carries out construction activities at the Antarctic and sub Antarctic stations and engineering and technical management group at the AAD's head office in Kingston, Tasmania. It works closely with Design & Engineering and Antarctic Infrastructure Operations & Maintenance teams to deliver and maintain all critical life support systems.

**The Job**
Whilst in the Project Engineer role, provide specialist project management knowledge and engineering construction and design skills for a wide range of Antarctic infrastructure projects, in particular:

- review and provide input to design for constructability,
- produce detailed works plans for the Summer and Winter construction periods to optimise resources and time on station,
- develop scopes of work for subcontractors and suppliers,
- co-ordinate the development of detailed cost plans for the delivery, construction, installation and commissioning of new and significant upgrades to Antarctic infrastructure,
- incorporate workplace health and safety, environmental protection and energy efficiency measures into infrastructure designs,
- develop conceptual infrastructure designs in a wide range of engineering fields with a focus on cold region engineering and prefabrication,
- conduct environmental impact assessments,
- identify and evaluate risk at all levels of engineering projects - safety, environmental and financial, and schedule and formulate and implement appropriate mitigation strategies,
- provide expertise into lifecycle and major maintenance planning for Antarctic and subantarctic infrastructure,
- develop and maintain project documentation, including budgets, schedules, contracts, safety plans, quality control schemes, season plans and progress reports,
- supervise the multi-disciplined trade group's workload/training program at head office.

Whilst on station:

- manage the projects trade team to meet project milestones and season plans.
- schedule, co-ordinate, and monitor the relevant trade skills and necessary equipment for maintenance tasks and provide progress reports,
- manage environmental controls and ensure compliance with project and requirements,
- develop and implement safety controls in accordance with project requirement,
- participate in station leadership tasks and manage stakeholder interfaces with project works,
- provide input into the development of rolling future town plans for Australia's Antarctic stations.

**What we are looking for**

**Knowledge and experience**
- Recent on-site supervisory and managerial experience relating to construction and/or maintenance activities in the building or general construction industry overseeing the workload of a multi-disciplined trade group. Direct work group supervision experience is desirable.
- Knowledge of building construction and construction methodologies, ideally within environments relevant to Australia's Antarctic stations.
- Knowledge of infrastructure services including electrical and water distribution, water treatment, heating, sewer and fire systems.
- Experience maintaining appropriate work site safety procedures, including sound knowledge of work health and safety standards.
- Current or very recent proficiency in risk assessments and job hazard analyses relating to building and construction works or maintenance.
- Sound experience with identification and purchase of materials associated with the building maintenance programs and construction of new works.
- Experience in working in remote environments and dealing with the challenges associated with living alongside work colleagues.
