We are seeking a Registered Nurse to strengthen health outcomes through the provision of safe quality, clinically appropriate nursing care in partnership with patients/clients, their families and other health professionals.
The Team:
Launceston General Hospital (LGH) is one of Tasmania's major public hospitals, providing comprehensive healthcare services to the northern region of the state. Within LGH,Wombat Wardis a dedicated paediatric inpatient unit that plays a vital role in delivering high-quality, family-centred care to infants, children, and adolescents.
Wombat Ward is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of passionate healthcare professionals including paediatric nurses, medical officers, allied health staff, and support personnel. The team is committed to providing safe, compassionate, and developmentally appropriate care tailored to the unique needs of young patients and their families.
As part of the Department of Health (DoH), Wombat Ward works collaboratively with other paediatric services across Tasmania, including outpatient clinics, emergency care, and specialist services. The team also partners with community health providers, schools, and child protection services to ensure continuity of care and support beyond the hospital setting.
Wombat Ward is actively involved in clinical education and training, supporting nursing and medical students through placements and mentorship. The team contributes to ongoing quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice to enhance patient outcomes and service delivery.
Together, the Wombat Ward team strives to create a nurturing and healing environment, ensuring that every child receives the best possible care while supporting families through what can be a challenging time. Their work is integral to the broader mission of the Department of Health in promoting the health and wellbeing of Tasmania's youngest citizens.
The Role:
- Clinical Care: Administering medications, monitoring vital signs, managing IV therapy, and responding to changes in patient condition.
- Family-Centred Support: Engaging with families to provide education, emotional support, and guidance throughout the child's hospital stay.
- Care Coordination: Collaborating with paediatricians, allied health professionals, and external services to ensure continuity of care.
- Documentation & Communication: Maintaining accurate clinical records and communicating effectively with the healthcare team.
- Patient Advocacy: Ensuring the rights, safety, and wellbeing of paediatric patients are upheld at all times.
- Education & Mentorship: Supporting student nurses and participating in ongoing professional development.
You will need
- Paediatric Clinical Expertise: Understanding of child development, paediatric illnesses, and age-specific care needs.
- Compassion and Empathy: Ability to connect with children and families in a supportive and respectful manner.
- Critical Thinking: Rapid assessment and decision-making skills in dynamic clinical situations.
- Communication Skills: Clear, age-appropriate communication with children and effective collaboration with families and colleagues.

Details of appointment:
Fixed term part time, day worker position, working up to 32 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as we can onboard youuntil 2 May 2026.
*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Salary:$78,179 to $105,995 pro rata per annum. Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.
- Salary range is in accordance withNurses and Midwives (Tasmania State Service) Agreement 2023.
Access to the Grade 4 salary range $99,455- $105,995 is subject to successful application for progression to Grade 4
In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:
- Post Graduate Allowance of up to 10 % based on qualification type
