About the role Ngankita Ngartu (Aboriginal Family Birthing Program) aims to improve maternal and neonatal health and wellbeing outcomes for all Aboriginal babies, their mothers, and families through the provision of culturally appropriate, safe and responsive care within a continuity of care framework. The Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Care (AMIC) Practitioner leads culturally safe maternity care alongside midwives and medical teams, supporting Aboriginal women and families through pregnancy and after birth. The AMIC Practitioner provides health education and family planning, and provides care in clinics, community settings, and home visits. Key duties of the role Work with Midwives, Obstetric/Medical, and multi-disciplinary teams in providing a culturally appropriate, safe, and responsive environment. Develop and implement strategies aimed at promoting healthy pregnancy, healthy babies, and illness prevention. Provide cultural support to Aboriginal women, Aboriginal babies to non-Aboriginal women, and their families. Support Aboriginal women and families to understand their healthcare rights and responsibilities. Identify psycho-social needs and complete referrals as required. Skills and Experience Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice. Eligible for registration with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board of Australia. Proven experience in the provision of antenatal, labour, birth and postnatal care. Experience working with Aboriginal people and their families with diverse value systems, cultural differences, and additional needs.
