Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position in the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD). This position will be located in the Department Older People's Mental Health within the WSLHD Mental Health Service.
The position will be for a period until the 30 June 2028.
Successful applicants will work as part of a small team, with peer to peer support, and opportunities for personal and professional development. Successful applicants will provide tertiary level consultative services to NSW public inpatient services caring for people experiencing extreme behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). There are no procedural, outpatient or on-call requirements within the role.

This is an exciting and rare opportunity that has arisen to participate as a senior clinician on the development and operation of the statewide tertiary clinical consultation and liaison service aimed at supporting NSW public inpatient services caring for people experiencing extreme behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD).
The team is small comprising a fulltime CNC 2, a full time senior occupational therapist and a part time (0.2) staff specialist (or equivalent 0.1 VMO). The team receives added support and guidance from the Older People's Mental Health Service (OPMH) based in Western Sydney Local Health District and the NSW OPMH Policy Unit.
Successful applicant will be expected to take part in planning and service development. The target population is limited to those experiencing extreme (Tier 7) BPSD, and setting is limited to NSW public inpatient units. Position location is currently based in Western Sydney but is negotiable across the state of NSW, with the majority of work occurring across the Greater Sydney region. The applicant should possess the ability to travel across various Local Health District Regions and provide team-based CL services within inpatient settings.
The successful applicant will be a member of the FRANZCP holding a Certificate in Old Age Psychiatry and have experience working with and providing clinical consultation/liaison to services caring for people with Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia. Applicants with more extensive experience in this specialized area of old age psychiatry will be considered.
Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within six months, may be considered. If successful, the applicant may not be subsequently eligible to commence their appointment until after the relevant qualifications and requirements are formally completed.
Essential Requirements for Appointment
1. Possess registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency. Must hold a current NSW Environment Protection Authority license (if applicable).
2. Certificate in Old Age Psychiatry. Must have sound clinical knowledge in Old Age Psychiatry and have experience working with and providing clinical consultation/liaison to services caring for people with Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia.
3. Ability to travel across various Local Health District Regions and provide team-based CL services within inpatient settings.
4. Sound knowledge of principles of Recovery based clinical practice and integrated Mental Health Care.
5. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including:
a. High level interpersonal and communication skills.
b. Demonstrated ability working within a multidisciplinary team.
c. Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence-based best practice.
d. Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision.
6. Familiarity with research concepts and commitment to support basic, applied or clinical research within the Department.
Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
