The National Environmental Protection Agency (National EPA) is an independent statutory authority established under the National Environmental Protection Agency Act 2025. Commencing on 1 July 2026, it will be Australia's national environmental regulator.
This is a foundational leadership appointment shaping Australia's national environmental regulatory architecture at a time of significant reform.
As Chief Executive Officer, you will lead the establishment and operation of a new national regulator responsible for compliance, enforcement and decision-making under Australia's environmental legislation, including the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, as amended in 2025.
As accountable authority, you will exercise statutory independence in relation to powers vested in your office and act under direction when performing functions delegated by the Minister for the Environment.
The role requires a constructive, solution-oriented regulatory approach that supports regulatory certainty for proponents while safeguarding Australia's nationally and internationally significant environmental assets.
You will bring:
1. Senior leadership experience in public sector administration, governance and regulation
2. Expertise in one or more of: biodiversity conservation, ecologically sustainable development, heritage, Indigenous affairs, law, law enforcement, or natural resource management
3. Experience leading complex regulatory environments
4. A demonstrated capacity to build trust across government, industry and community stakeholders
Remuneration for this appointment is set by the Remuneration Tribunal.
