The Department of Health is seeking applications to fill the key positions of Director (also known now at RACP as Training Program Director) and Deputy Director of Physician Training. The appointees will form a small team consisting of a Director of Physician Training, a Deputy Director of Physician Training, and administrative support. The positions may be shared by two appointees by mutual agreement and are 3-year, part‐time appointments.

We are looking for physicians who:

* Are passionate about physician training
* Have or will complete the three mandated RACP supervisor courses
* Have or will acquire detailed knowledge of the RACP training requirements
* Have an interest in medical education
* Have well proven organisational and communication skills
* Are willing to provide support and 'pastoral' care to the physician trainees
* Can set up and run the teaching program by engaging with the entire RACP community at Royal Hobart Hospital

Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania's largest hospital and major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH collaborates with the University of Tasmania and other institutions. All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

Duties:

* Medical care of patients.
* Undertake procedures as required in the area of practice.
* Participate in after‐hours on call roster.
* Teaching:
o Undertake undergraduate clinical teaching.
o Provide supervision and training of postgraduate trainees.
* Research:
o Maintain involvement in research activities.
* Administrative and Quality Improvement:
o Provide administrative and quality improvement functions for units as required.
* Work closely with corresponding nursing staff and support staff in the area of practice.
* Participation in disaster preparedness planning.
* Actively participate in and contribute to the organisation's Quality & Safety and Work Health & Safety processes, including in the development and implementation of safety systems, improvement initiatives, safeguarding practices for vulnerable people, and related training.
* The incumbent can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, that are within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying positions at this classification level.

Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $216,300 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $296,640 with further salary increments available.

* Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 – $310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award.

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

* Allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $28,786 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
* Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,974 pro rata per annum.
* On call allowance % of Base Salary.
* All other allowances as per current Award.
* And, subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on‐call, pro rata, additional payment will be paid from PPS. If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Details of Appointment

Director: Fixed term part‐time day work, working 15.2 hours per fortnight commencing from 26 May 2026 for 3 years.

Deputy Director: Fixed term part‐time day work, working 15.2 hours per fortnight commencing from 18 August 2026 for 3 years.

Notwithstanding hours may be negotiated with the successful applicants.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full‐time, part‐time and casual vacancies.

Highly Desirable Requirements

Director

* Five years RACP Fellowship
* Three years experience supervising medical trainees as an Educational Supervisor in RACP Basic Training (or equivalent experience)

Deputy Director

* RACP Fellowship
* Experience supervising medical trainees as an Educational Supervisor in RACP Basin Training (or equivalent experience)
* Holds specialist registration; or
* Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway
* Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.
* Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements)

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‐employment check before taking up the appointment. The following checks are to be conducted:

* Conviction checks in the following areas:
o Crimes of violence
o Sex related offences
o Serious drug offences
o Crimes involving dishonesty
* Disciplinary action in previous employment check
