Primary objective
Implement departmental and school-based policies and programs to address the individual learning needs of students with a
disability and, as an integral team member, contribute to the achievement of the school’s goals.
Context statement
Forrest Parade School is located in Palmerston and caters for up to 130 students with special needs. The school offers specialised
and individualised programs for students who have been identified as having moderate and severe intellectual and/or multiple
disability who are aged from 3 ½ to 12 years. Staff will have an exciting opportunity to contribute as an integral team member to
the development of the culture, vision and structure of the school and the creation of strong and positive partnerships with families
and the community.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Actively participate, as a team member, in the planning, preparation, implementation and assessment of individualised
educational programs in special school, pre and primary school and community settings.
2. Administer first aid and provide self-care and medical interventions to students in accordance with school policies.
3. Effectively communicate with students with disabilities, families and work colleagues whilst maintaining confidentiality.
4. Prioritise and perform work tasks, under limited supervision and in a reliable manner, whilst adhering to school and Department
of Education policies.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven successful experience working with, and ability to relate effectively with students who have multiple and profound
disabilities, significantly below average intellectual functioning and who have deficits in adaptive functioning in areas such as
communication, self-care, social/interpersonal skills, functional academic skills, work, health, and safety.
2. Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with other school staff, parents and members of the local school
community in order to support productive partnerships to achieve optimal educational outcomes.
3. Proven ability to communicate effectively with students with very high support needs through appropriate interpersonal skills
including augmentative communication strategies.
4. Demonstrated sound computer literacy skills, including knowledge and experience with the effective use of technology with
students with a disability and the development of resources through programs including Clicker 8 and Boardmaker.
5. Experience in the support and delivery of Numicon, Comprehensive Literacy and an awareness of Social and Emotional Learning
(SEL).
6. Experience with specialised equipment including alternative communication devices and in particular Pragmatic Organisation
Dynamic Display (PODD).
Desirable
1. Qualifications or ability to obtain qualifications related to supporting students with disabilities in educational settings.
2. Light Rigid (LR) Drivers Licence
