Shape Environmental Strategy for Australia's Only Passenger Ferry Service of Its Kind

Lead sustainability innovation across iconic Spirit of Tasmania vessels and our new state-of-the-art Terminal 3

Strategic influence in a truly one-of-a-kind maritime-environmental role

Architect environmental frameworks—design, not just implement

About Spirit of Tasmania

Spirit of Tasmania is widely recognised for its contribution to the Australian tourism industry and for fostering Australia's economic development through the provision of a world-class passenger and freight service connecting mainland Australia with Tasmania. With significant recent investment in new-generation vessels and our just-completed Terminal 3 facility at Devonport, we are entering an exciting new era of growth and transformation.

Why This Role Is Different

TT-Line Company operates Australia's only passenger ferry service of this kind, combining environmental stewardship with Bass Strait maritime operations. Our vessels navigate one of the world's most challenging maritime environments while delivering services that are economically vital to Tasmania. This isn't a typical corporate sustainability role—it's the opportunity to shape environmental strategy for an operation that is genuinely one-of-a-kind.

The Opportunity

As our inaugural Environmental and Sustainability Advisor, you will be responsible for ensuring TT-Line's compliance with all environmental regulatory reporting obligations while driving our sustainability performance and innovation agenda. This newly created role reports directly to the General Counsel and will be based in Devonport or Launceston, with travel required to Geelong on occasions.

Your Strategic Impact

Environmental Compliance and Reporting:

Manage preparation and timely submission of mandatory environmental reports including National Pollutant Inventory (NPI ), National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER ), and Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards (ASRS ) disclosures

Develop and maintain robust environmental data collection and management systems to support accurate regulatory reporting

Monitor environmental legislation changes and serve as primary contact with environmental regulators

Conduct compliance audits across TT-Line operations and maintain comprehensive compliance registers

Sustainability Strategy and Innovation:

Develop and implement TT-Line's sustainability strategy, setting environmental performance targets aligned with industry best practice

Drive the development of TT-Line's pathway to net-zero emissions, evaluating alternative fuels, renewable energy integration, and emissions abatement technologies

Lead climate adaptation and resilience planning initiatives, assessing climate-related risks and developing adaptation strategies

Champion sustainability initiatives that advance beyond compliance, including emissions reduction projects, circular economy initiatives, and energy efficiency improvements

Develop sustainable procurement practices, integrating environmental criteria into supply chain decisions

Systems and Stakeholder Engagement:

Develop and implement ISO 14001-aligned environmental management systems supporting continual improvement

Provide expert advice and training to staff on environmental compliance obligations and sustainability practices

Drive development of TT-Line's culture of environmental stewardship, embedding environmental considerations into business operations

What You'll Bring

To be successful, you will have:

Substantial working experience in environmental compliance and sustainability management, including mandatory environmental reporting obligations (NPI, NGER)

Proven capabilities in developing and implementing environmental management systems and sustainability frameworks

Relevant tertiary degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Sustainability, or related discipline

Strong knowledge of Australian environmental legislation, regulations and reporting requirements

Preferably, experience within transport, maritime or industrial sectors where you've navigated complex operational environments

Understanding of maritime-specific environmental challenges such as emissions management, ballast water management, marine biodiversity impacts, and energy efficiency in vessel operations

Desirably, exposure to Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards (ASRS) and AASB S2 Climate Related Disclosures

Strong stakeholder engagement skills and ability to communicate complex environmental information to diverse audiences

Professional membership or certification with EIANZ or equivalent (desirable)

Ability to obtain and hold a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC) for vessel access

What We Offer

Competitive salary package commensurate with experience + superannuation

Flexible working arrangements and supportive work environment

Professional development opportunities in maritime sustainability

Strategic influence in a newly created role reporting to executive leadership

The opportunity to build a professional legacy in an iconic Australian operation

Ready to Make Your Mark?

This is a unique moment for an exceptional environmental professional. As we commission new vessels and open Terminal 3, we're seeking the strategic thinker who will define environmental excellence for Australia's only passenger ferry service of this kind. If you're ready to architect environmental strategy for an iconic operation that matters to communities, economies, and ecosystems, we want to hear from you.
