AEMO's System Design division is responsible for planning the power system in the context of unprecedented transformation. The rapid transition to renewable energy generation and electrification of many sectors has seen sharp rises in proposed transmission and distribution connection projects.
In Victoria, AEMO performs the responsibilities of the planning and approval for transmission augmentation, including connections which is typically carried out in other states by transmission network service providers.
Victorian Planning and Connections plays a key role in successfully navigating the energy future by determining and procuring investment in the best interest of consumers, and by acting as a trusted advisor for Victorian Government and connection proponents.
About the role
The Infrastructure Development team has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Engineer with transmission experience to join the Victorian Planning and Connections group and be part Victoria's energy transition.With your industry experience and knowledge of HV transmission networks, you will provide technical expertise across AEMO, VicGrid, Network Service Providers and connection customers in addition to other network stakeholders.
This role is based in AEMO's Melbourne office. AEMO provides an essential service and actively promotes flexible working arrangements within our team. We have strong team structures, culture, and communication.
What you will be doing
- Develop Primary Functional Requirements (PFRs), Protection and Control Requirements (PCRs), and other technical documentation for network connections and augmentations.
- Design control schemes to manage congestion and maintain system security under contingency conditions.
- Conduct technical assessments of key documentation for energisation approval and practical completion.
- Provide technical input into the development and negotiation of connection agreements.
- Contribute into connection enquiry responses and negotiate connection arrangements.
- Collaborate across AEMO, industry, and stakeholders to drive timely, efficient delivery of major infrastructure projects and strengthen AEMO's role as a trusted advisor.
What you will bring to the role
Education
Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering and be a registered professional engineer (Victoria preferable).
Experience and Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of the energy sector, National Electricity Rules (NER), and Victorian transmission connection processes.
- Extensive experience in HV transmission design and delivery, including technical leadership roles.
- In-depth understanding of electrical primary/secondary design, protection and control schemes, and special control systems (e.g. runback, fast trip).
- Skilled in defining technical requirements for power system augmentations, including plant equipment, earthing, and control systems.
- Proficient in interpreting complex engineering reports and using electrical analysis tools such as PSSE.
- Strong communication, reporting, and client-facing skills, with proven ability to engage and negotiate with stakeholders.
