Salary range: $160,000 - $180,000

Start date: ASAP (ideally no later than January 2026)

Job Overview:

In this role, you will be responsible for leading the fermentation team's development and strategy, from early-stage R&D (screening) to successful process development ready for technology transfer. You will also contribute to the Upstream Processing (USP) tech transfer and commercial scale-up with our partnering global Contract Manufacturing Organisations (CMOs). You will oversee the development of USP and contribute to the Downstream Processing (DSP) bioprocesses at lab scale to support production based on company priorities while also defining the strategic vision for the bioprocess teams and managing their expansion.

You possess a deep understanding of fermentation science (e.g. microbiology physiology) and an engineering background (chemical or biochemical engineering) that enables you to design and implement scalable bioprocesses. Your experience spans high-throughput lab-scale R&D to pilot-scale and commercial production. You are a problem-solver who can work calmly under pressure and to tight deadlines, with exceptional communication, scheduling, and planning skills critical for managing overseas collaborations. Most importantly, you are passionate about changing the food industry and making a great impact on humanity.

Key Responsibilities:

* Lead the bioprocess R&D team and contribute to the overarching bioprocess strategy.
* Oversee contribute to as USP expert to the successful scale-up and technology transfer of bioprocesses to international CMOs, ensuring robust and reproducible production.
* Develop and communicate a clear strategic vision for the fermentation teams to ensure alignment with company goals.
* Direct the day-to-day management and organization of the fermentation R&D team and oversee the expansion of the team to meet future business needs.
* Provide mentorship and supervision to junior research staff.
* Drive bioprocess innovation from strain screening and process optimization at small scale to pilot-scale validation.
* Serve as the primary USP technical point of contact for overseas CMOs.
* Prepare and present technical data and results to both internal and external stakeholders, including opportunities for intellectual property.
* Collaborate closely with other team leaders and the wider R&D team.
* Undertake domestic and international travel as required to visit partner organisations and CMOs (expect ~30% travel annually).

About You (including essential education & skills)

You have a background in fermentation science, cell physiology, chemical engineering, biotechnology or a related discipline, with demonstrated hands-on expertise in both USP (fermentation) and DSP (purification). You have a proven track record of successfully leading multidisciplinary project teams through technology transfer and scale up processes. You are a natural leader with strong emphasis on empathy and mentorship, a collaborative spirit, and excellent interpersonal skills. You thrive in an innovative environment, can make sound judgments, and act with integrity while dealing with confidential matters.

It is essential that you have:

* A post-graduate degree in microbiology, fermentation, biochemical/chemical engineering, biotechnology, bioprocess engineering, or related field.
* 10+ years of experience in industrial biotechnology, with a significant focus on both USP and DSP.
* Experience with successful technology transfer from the lab to commercial production.
* Demonstrated hands-on expertise in fermentation R&D, including strain screening and process optimization.
* Significant experience managing and collaborating with external partners (e.g. CMO's)
* Strong leadership experience with a history of successfully leading bioprocess teams.
* Excellent communication, presentation, and planning skills.
* Demonstrated desire to make a cross-functional program successful.

It is highly desirable that you have:

* Experience in food technology, food production, and HACCP principles.
* Experience in GMP methodologies.
* High energy, fast-paced, and driven with the ability to multitask and exercise sound judgment to make decisions.
