Join to apply for the Data Engineer - Data & AI Platform role at Tyro Payments.
About The Role
The Data Engineer plays a key role in building and scaling Tyro's Data & AI Platform, which underpins analytics, machine learning, and emerging AI capabilities across the organisation. Depending on team needs and individual strengths, this role may focus on delivery-oriented data engineering or platform and enablement engineering, building reusable patterns, reference architectures, and guardrails that enable teams to safely develop data- and AI-driven products. Working closely with the Data & AI Platform Manager, Data Engineers design, build, and maintain robust data pipelines, infrastructure, and data products that support business intelligence, analytics, and AI experimentation. This is a hands‐on role combining strong software engineering and data architecture practices with curiosity for applied AI. You will help enable responsible, scalable, and production‐ready AI solutions, empowering squads across Tyro to leverage data safely and effectively. With growing demand and a small, high‐impact team, this role is critical to delivering Tyro's data, AI, and company strategy.
What You'll Do Build and scale Tyro's Data & AI Platform
* Design, build, and maintain robust, scalable data pipelines and integrations across the Data & AI Platform.
* Ensure performance, reliability, and observability across the data stack using modern cloud and DevOps practices (AWS, Terraform, CI/CD).
* Support the ingestion, transformation, and quality of enterprise data in Snowflake and related storage systems.
Enable AI and advanced analytics
* Partner with Product and Engineering teams to operationalise machine learning and generative AI solutions.
* Build strong data foundations and features to support LLMs, agentic systems, and AI experimentation.
* Design and maintain reusable AI platform patterns, templates, and reference implementations (e.g. training, inference, deployment).
* Enable product and application teams to safely deploy AI capabilities independently within defined guardrails.
* Collaborate with Cloud Enablement and Architecture teams to ensure AI workloads meet infrastructure and security standards.
Collaborate and deliver impact
* Work within cross-functional squads to understand analytics, reporting, and AI needs.
* Build data products, APIs, and dashboards that democratise access to trusted data and insights across Finance, Risk, Product, and other teams.
* Continuously improve the scalability, resilience, and security of Tyro's data ecosystem.
Champion quality, security, and governance
* Uphold high standards for data quality, observability, and compliance (including APRA, PCI‐DSS, and Responsible AI principles).
* Implement automated testing, version control, and security best practices across all data systems.
What You'll Bring
* Strong experience with cloud-based data platforms and DevOps practices (AWS, ECS, S3, Lambda, SageMaker, Glue).
* Proficiency in data warehouse design and development (e.g., Snowflake).
* Experience with data streaming and processing technologies (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis, Spark, Flink).
* Strong software engineering foundations – especially in Python, Scala, Java, or Kotlin – with a focus on testing, performance, and security.
* Deep curiosity and passion for AI, machine learning, and data-driven innovation.
* Experience operationalising machine learning models or AI services in production environments.
* Familiarity with MLOps tooling, feature stores, or vector databases.
* Experience developing or supporting dashboards and analytics tools (e.g., Tableau, Looker).
* Understanding of data governance, ethical AI, and responsible data use in regulated industries.
* Experience designing developer enablement platforms, internal tooling, or reusable engineering frameworks is highly regarded.
Performance Indicators
* Adoption of data & AI platform patterns.
* Self‐service enablement of data or AI features/capabilities.
* Successful transition of PoCs from experimentation into governed production environments.
