Basic Trainee – Acute Care

The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking a qualified Basic Trainee for dual rotations in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia at the Royal Hobart Hospital. The role is a fixed‐term, full‐time appointment lasting 12 months from 1 February 2027 to 7 February 2028.

Position Details

* Job Title: Basic Trainee – Acute Care (Registrar Level 5)
* Salary: $134,930 per annum (Medical Practitioners Award, Tasmanian State Service)
* Hours: 76 hours per fortnight (day work) plus 10 hours protected training time per fortnight (pro‐rated)
* Location: Anaesthetics/ICU, Royal Hobart Hospital

Responsibilities

* Provide acute medical care in the ICU setting, working day and night shifts under supervision of Consultant Intensivists and Senior Registrars.
* Participate in the general registrar pool, including after‐hours and satellite ICU duties.
* Perform anesthesia duties in theatres, day procedure units, acute pain service and pre‐admission clinics; shift pattern includes day, evening, and weekend roster when competent.
* Support the pre‐admission clinic for all surgical specialties (≈1 day per week).
* Engage in protected training and continue professional development as part of the role.

Essential Requirements

* General Registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
* Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration.
* Minimum two years full‐time equivalent postgraduate hospital clinical experience in Australia or NewZealand.
* Postgraduate year5 or equivalent status during the employment term (postgraduate year6 or above in 2027 is not permitted).
* Strong clinical skills and knowledge, with excellent communication ability.
* Career interest in Intensive Care Medicine, Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Remote and Rural Medicine.
* Capability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and under stressful conditions.

Desirable Experience and Criteria

* University of Tasmania graduate or Tasmanian public‐hospital employee.
* Previous RMO experience in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine or high‐acuity inpatient services.
* Completion of acute care and resuscitation courses such as ALS, BASIC, APLS, EMST, plus relevant ultrasound and bedside echo training.
* Experience in audit, research, teaching, safety and quality initiatives.
* Leadership experience and strong academic record.
* High‐level oral and written communication skills and respectful, ethical interactions with colleagues and patients.

Additional Information

* This role is not an ANZCA training position.
* Applicants with prior experience in equivalent positions will be reviewed for suitability to this role or for a registrar position.
* Both DCCM and DAPM departments determine allocation of term order, commencing on 1February2027.
