Primary objective
The Media Manager position is a crucial and senior role within the Media team. This role involves working in a fast-paced, high-pressure
environment, and requires an ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively as well as an ability to provide leadership and mentoring to
junior staff. The Media Manager will report directly to the Executive Director.
Key duties and responsibilities
To be successful in the role the ideal candidate will be someone with demonstrated experience in media issues and management.
Media Relations:
• Provide sound media and communications advice to senior managers and executives, including preparing and briefing key spokespersons for
media interviews.
* Coordinate press conferences, media briefings, media inquiries and interviews for key stakeholders within the organisation.
* Develop and maintain strong relationships with local, national, and international media outlets.
* Form part of a 24-hour on-call roster to ensure media enquiries are addressed in an effective and timely manner.
Crisis Communications:
• Develop comprehensive crisis communication plans and protocols to effectively manage and mitigate reputational risks during emergencies
or critical incidents.
* Provide accurate and timely information to the media and the public during crisis situations.
* Monitor media coverage and social media channels to identify and address any misinformation or rumours related to the organisation's
activities.
Content Creation and Management:
• Create compelling written and visual content, including press releases, news articles, social media posts, and multimedia materials.
* Oversee the organisation's media presence and ensure consistent messaging across all platforms.
* Collaborate with internal teams to identify newsworthy stories and events to promote through various media channels.
Strategic Planning:
• Develop and implement strategic communication plans to support the organisation's goals and objectives.
* Conduct research and analysis to identify emerging communication trends, audience preferences, and stakeholder perceptions.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Experience in media issues management, including developing end-to-end media strategies and crisis communications plans.
1. Proven ability to proactively identify opportunities and maximise media opportunities in line with the organisation's objectives and
achievements while exercising sound judgement.
1. Excellent written and verbal skills, including the ability to prepare spokespeople for media interviews.
2. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop strong, effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
3. Proven ability to work as part of a team and demonstrate leadership and strong mentoring skills, proactively providing support to other team
members as needed as well as an ability to operate independently where required.
Desirable
1. An appropriate tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in journalism, public relations, communications, or a similar discipline.
1. Experience in leading a small team or mentoring and supporting other team members. An ability to support the Executive Director, including
backfill opportunities, would be desirable.
3. Knowledge of protocol and honours and awards in an emergency service environment
