Opportunity to participate and /or lead research in the field of speech and language and literacy for primary school aged children
What you'll be doing
Provide specialized expertise in the comprehensive assessment of speech and language and specific learning difficulties and formulate and deliver specific literacy and language intervention programs.
Work collaboratively within the Child Development Unit as a member of a multidisciplinary team which includes clinical psychology, medical, educational, nursing and allied health professionals.
Liaise with and provide consultation to other professionals within the hospital, from the Department of Education, Royal Far West and other community agencies within NSW that support children with learning difficulties in the area of literacy.
Participate in the professional activities of the Speech Pathology Department. Actively participate in teaching and research activities within the Child Development Unit.
PROFESSIONAL AND CLINICAL
Provide tertiary level assessment and diagnosis of speech, language and related learning difficulties in preschool and school age children, independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Document results of assessment which include high level analysis of the presenting language and literacy problem.
Provide clinical management which includes:
* Formulation and delivery of an individual intervention program.
* Family counseling and feedback.
* Identification and coordination of appropriate interventions.
* Liaison with other agencies especially educational services.
* Monitoring and review of speech, language and literacy.
Provide therapy to patients within the designated caseload and ensure a high professional standard of speech and language service within the Unit. Consult with members of the multidisciplinary team, hospital colleagues and other health and educational professionals on relevant speech, language and literacy issues.
Provide consultation regarding the development and implementation of Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) systems as necessary and appropriate.
Participate in teaching and supervision where appropriate. Develop and conduct collaborative research within the child Development Unit and together with The Department of Education.
Provide professional support and supervision for student speech pathologists at the Child Development Unit in collaboration with the Speech Pathology Department's clinical educator.
Participate in professional activities of Speech Pathology Department.
Conduct speech pathology assessments and activities in accordance with the Speech Pathology Department's Policy and Procedures.
Identify opportunities for improvement in clinical practice and participate in quality assurance projects of the Child Development Unit.
Plan for, implement and evaluate service provision for the caseload.
About You
We're looking for someone who:
* Eligibility for membership to Speech Pathology Australia.
* A minimum of three years' experience in conducting language and literacy assessments in children and adolescents with complex developmental disorders and autism spectrum.
* Demonstrated advanced practice skills and extensive knowledge in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of specific learning disorders, in particular literacy and demonstrated experience in the ability to formulate and deliver individual treatment plans as appropriate for individuals with specific learning difficulties, complex learning disorders and autism.
* Demonstrated ability to consult and liaise with other professionals as part of overall patient care.
* Previous experience in speech pathology clinical supervision and demonstrated provision of continuing education to other professional groups, demonstrated participation in education activities and projects and a willingness to participate in research as relevant and necessary.
