Primary Objective
The Apprentice Diesel Mechanic at Hazeldene's is responsible for developing practical skills and technical knowledge in the maintenance, repair, and servicing of a diverse fleet of diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
Under the guidance of experienced mechanics, the role focuses on supporting the Vehicle Maintenance department to ensure operational reliability and safety, while progressing toward a nationally recognized qualification in Heavy Vehicle Mechanical Technology.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in performing routine maintenance, inspections, and servicing of diesel-powered vehicles, including trucks, tractors, forklifts, and refrigerated transport units, to ensure optimal performance.
Support fault diagnosis and repairs, including auto electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, engine, and transmission systems, under the supervision of qualified mechanics.
Work on a variety of equipment, including European, Japanese, and American driveline trucks, earthmoving equipment, and generators, to gain hands-on experience.
Follow workplace safety protocols and contribute to Hazeldene's Zero Harm goal by maintaining a safe and organized workshop environment.
Document maintenance activities, including service logs and repair records, to support accurate fleet management and compliance.
Participate in on-the-job training and attend TAFE or Registered Training Organisation (RTO) courses to progress toward a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology.
Collaborate with the Vehicle Maintenance team to prioritize tasks and ensure timely completion of repairs and services.
Assist in troubleshooting mechanical issues, using diagnostic tools and techniques, to develop technical proficiency.
Maintain workshop tools, equipment, and hardware stocks, ensuring they are in good condition and readily available.
Adhere to Hazeldene's biosecurity, Good Manufacturing Practices, and quality standards in all maintenance activities.
Perform additional tasks as directed by the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, which may include after-hours or weekend work to minimize operational impact.
Engage in continuous learning to stay updated on industry advancements and best practices in diesel mechanics.
