Wagga Wagga Base Hospital provides a 24/7 Emergency Department and offers a full range of medical, surgical, paediatric, obstetric, and rehabilitation services, along with allied health and support services.
About MLHD: Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) spans 125,243 square kilometres across southern New South Wales and is the largest employer in the region with over 5,000 healthcare staff across 33 hospitals and 12 primary health care centres.
What you'll be doing
The Bariatric / Upper GI Fellow will be a newly qualified surgeon seeking to enhance skills in elective and emergency surgery and outpatient surgical consultations. The fellowship is endorsed by the Australian & New Zealand Metabolic Obesity Surgical Society (ANZMOSS) as a recognised post for specialist training in metabolic / bariatric surgical care.
The Fellowship will consist of clinical and research work, including bariatric surgery and perioperative care.
The Bariatric Fellow will:
- participate in the on-call roster
- assist with the educational role of the department
- provide clinical care to patients
- attend bariatric outpatient clinics (MOS Clinic) to enhance knowledge of assessment and management, including collaboration with allied health services
The Fellow will work with Specialist Surgeons and Registrars at MLHD, Wagga Wagga Base Hospital for a 12-month period. There may be a requirement to provide support at other sites within the LHD.
Where you'll be working
Wagga Wagga Base Hospital provides a 24/7 Emergency Department and supports the township and surrounding areas. The facility includes a Cardiac Catheter Lab, a Hybrid (DSA) lab, and a Cardiac Procedure Room, with a range of critical care, medical, surgical, paediatric, obstetric, and rehabilitation services. There are comprehensive allied health services available.
Wagga Wagga is the largest regional city in NSW with an urban population of over 60,000 residents and a variety of cultural and recreational opportunities.
Selection Criteria
- Evidence of a Medical qualification that is registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Letter of support from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons indicating completion of fellowship training requirements in General Surgery and successful completion of the Part II examination.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing medical education relevant to General Surgery.
- Willing to commit to an equitable hospital on-call roster for Surgery.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with medical and other health service colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to communicate effectively with patients and staff.
- Willingness to teach medical students and staff with a demonstrated commitment to clinical quality improvement, peer review, equal employment chance, and Occupational Health Safety and Rehabilitation.
- Demonstrated significant experience relevant to General Surgery and competence in skills relevant to Australian rural hospital practice, including trauma and emergency scenarios.
