The Don River Railway (DRR), operated by The Van Diemen Light Railway Society Inc., is a beloved heritage railway and a premier tourist attraction in Tasmania, dedicated to recreating living railway history. The integrity and presentation of our track and permanent way are fundamental to the safe and reliable operation of our trains, and to the overall visitor experience.
Opportunity
We are seeking enthusiastic and reliable Permanent Way Volunteers to join our team. This is a hands-on support role where you will assist with various tasks related to the maintenance and upkeep of DRR's railway lines and surrounding grounds. You will contribute directly to ensuring our track environment is safe, clear, and well-maintained. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, are keen to learn about railway infrastructure, and want to contribute to a unique heritage preservation effort. No prior experience is required, just a willingness to learn and work as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
Assist with vegetation management along the track corridor (e.g., clearing brush, weeding, minor pruning).
Help with general clean-up and removal of debris from the track and surrounding areas.
Support qualified Trackwork Specialists with non-skilled tasks, such as moving materials (e.g., sleepers, tools) under supervision.
Assist with basic grounds maintenance along the railway line.
Adhere strictly to all DRR safety procedures and site guidelines, including proper use of PPE.
Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment.
