Primary objective
Student Engagement Advisors are responsible for complex case management and the coordination of services to parents and
school aged students who have been identified as being disengaged from schooling, with the aim of re-engagement into education,
training, or an eligible option.

Context statement
Student Attendance and Engagement Programs and Services are responsible for the implementation and management of a range
of Australian and Northern Territory Government initiatives, focused on student attendance and engagement in schooling or other
eligible options, leading to improved school enrolment and attendance rates in the Northern Territory.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Work proactively with schools to support, develop, and implement school attendance strategies based on patterns and trends

evidenced in attendance data and align with Australian and NT Government’s priorities and strategies for attendance.
2. Develop clear case plans to re-engage children and young people in education that articulate goals, actions, and timeframes, in

partnership with families, relevant school staff, and other government and non-government agencies within statutory and non-
statutory frameworks.

3. As an Authorised Person under the Education Act 2015, issue notices and direction in relation to school enrolment, attendance,
and participation, including infringement notices.

4. Maintain accurate activity data and case management records in line with statutory and departmental requirements.
5. Participate in and contribute to school initiatives and activities aimed at attendance and engagement.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Extensive knowledge and experience in effective case management in relation to children and young people within statutory

and non-statutory frameworks.
2. Demonstrated experience with databases to accurately record information that may be used in legal proceedings, and

knowledge and experience in managing sensitive and confidential information.
3. Demonstrated capability to work within a cross-cultural school environment, interact effectively with children and young people

from diverse cultures and successfully develop effective partnerships with students, families, school staff and community and
government stakeholders.

4. Demonstrated conflict resolution skills in challenging situations.
5. Demonstrated high level written and oral communication skills with the ability to tailor communication to suit the audience.
6. Demonstrated ability to manage own workload, time management techniques and initiative to increase productivity and achieve

results.
8. Proficient in the use of computer software including Excel, Word and Microsoft Outlook.
9. Ability and willingness to travel to and from remote and very remote communities as required in light aircraft or 4WD.

Desirable
1. Willingness to conduct lengthy foot patrols in the local community.
2. Relevant tertiary qualification in Social Work, Humanitarian Studies, Community Development and/or Youth Work.

The occupant of this position must have/be able to obtain a Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card) and drivers’ licence.
