Job Description:
The Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking a variety of meals and food items for the college canteen in accordance with daily menus, dietary requirements, and food safety regulations. The role requires the ability to work independently and as part of a kitchen team to maintain smooth operations during busy service times. This position supports the college's commitment to quality, nutrition, and service.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Plan and prepare menu items, meals, and snacks according to recipes, dietary needs, and portion controls.
* Cook and present food efficiently during breakfast, lunch, and dinner service for students and staff.
* Monitor food preparation and cooking processes to ensure food quality, safety, and hygiene standards are maintained.
* Operate kitchen equipment such as ovens, grills, deep fryers, and food processors in a safe and effective manner.
* Maintain cleanliness of kitchen, food preparation areas, and service counters in accordance with HACCP and WHS standards.
* Manage food inventory and stock levels, including ordering supplies and reducing waste.
* Ensure compliance with food safety regulations, including temperature checks, allergen control, and correct food storage.
* Assist in menu development to incorporate seasonal ingredients and multicultural preferences.
* Work collaboratively with canteen and campus staff to deliver meals in a timely and coordinated manner.
* Train and mentor junior kitchen assistants as required.
Skills and Qualifications:
* Certificate III or IV in Commercial Cookery or equivalent qualification.
* Minimum of 1 year experience in a commercial kitchen, preferably in a canteen, institutional, or high-volume food service setting.
* Sound knowledge of Australian food safety standards and HACCP procedures.
* Ability to prepare meals efficiently while maintaining quality and presentation.
* Strong time management, organisational, and communication skills.
* Ability to work early morning shifts and weekends if required.
* Flexibility to adapt menus and cooking practices to suit student dietary needs.
* Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks during peak service periods.
