**Who we are**
The Environmental Permitting and Compliance Division is looking for people passionate about regulation and the environment. It is an exciting time to join the Division within the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. We are a regulator that works to a high professional standard to deliver better practice regulation. The Compliance and Enforcement Branch (CEB) provides a centralised compliance and enforcement capability for the department's environmental legislation. We work with business, industry, government and the community to understand and improve compliance with national environmental law. CEB conducts civil and criminal investigations, collects and analyses environmental intelligence, monitors compliance with environmental approvals, and engages with the community we regulate.

The Triage and Operations Coordination Section (TAOCS) is the first point of entry for receiving allegations related to non-compliance under a range of Commonwealth environmental legislation. The section is responsible for assessing allegations to determine the priority and most appropriate course of action, including referral to other sections within the branch for compliance and enforcement response. The section also conducts Environmental History Checks and Fit and Proper Person Checks required for decision making under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and other environmental legislation. In addition, TAOCS provides an executive support function to the Operations Coordination Committee, the peak decision-making committee responsible for allocating resources of the branch. TAOCS play a critical role in improving business practices, with projects underway to strengthen decision making and resource allocation across the branch.

**The Job**
The Assistant Director - Triage is responsible for leading and managing a team of assessment officers responsible for undertaking triage assessments on allegations of non-compliance under Commonwealth environmental legislation. The role is dynamic, with work spanning across assessments, Ministerial Correspondence and executive briefing. TAOCS is dedicated to maturing business practices. The Assistant Director - Triage will play a key role in reform and improvement work to ensure TAOCS is well positioned to deliver on branch, department and government objectives.

**Knowledge and experience**
- TAOCS is seeking a motivated and professional leader with a strong work ethic and interest in contributing to better practice environmental compliance.
- Experience leading teams and providing strong leadership, direction and management, including monitoring, reviewing, changing deadlines, and evaluating team and individual performance providing regular constructive feedback to achieve outcomes.
- Experience effectively working in changing environments.
- Experience effectively coping with change, handling risk and uncertainty and making decisions based on evidence and data.
- Experience in reforming business processes to deliver outcomes efficiently and aligning with legislation.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working closely and collaboratively with senior executive and leadership, providing advice and guidance on a range of issues, including divisional priorities, governance arrangements, staffing and business planning.
- Experience in preparing, coordinating, contributing to and quality assuring a range of written material, including briefs, agenda papers, reports, talking points, presentations, background briefings and ministerial correspondence.
- Experience in contributing to the branch and department objectives and driving a positive culture.
