Senior government lawyer - automation and ai

Allygroup is seeking several experienced Lawyers for a secondment opportunity to support an Artificial Intelligence Team in a high-profile Australian government agency. This position is offered as an initial three‑month contract, with the possibility of a further three‑month extension.

This role is open to multiple locations including Canberra (ACT), Brisbane (QLD), Melbourne (VIC), Sydney (NSW).

What We’re Looking For:

Artificial Intelligence Team:

* Draft high‑quality legal advice and undertake the full range of tasks expected of a lawyer working in an in‑house government environment.

* Work proactively and independently, seeking guidance when required, while collaborating closely with internal clients to understand and anticipate their legal and operational needs.

* Proactively engage with clients within an agile project environment, including participating in iterative project work and maintaining responsive communication.

* Review technical project documentation to inform the provision of accurate, timely and practical legal advice.

* Provide legal advice on:

o Privacy law advice

o Administrative law

o Regulation of artificial intelligence, particularly in the Commonwealth context.

o In-house Commonwealth government experience and experience advising on technology projects will be highly regarded but not required.

Automation Team:

* Draft legal advice and carry out the full range of tasks expected of a lawyer working in an in‑house government environment.

* Work proactively and independently, seeking guidance when required.

* Collaborate closely with internal clients to understand, anticipate and respond to their legal and operational needs.

* Provide legal advice on:

o Administrative law

o Statutory interpretation

o Experience advising on program legislation (eg, Social Security Law, Family Assistance Law and Health legislation) will be highly regarded but not required.

o In-house Commonwealth government experience and experience advising on automated decision making and legislative reform processes will be highly regarded but not required.

Duties and Responsibilities

May include some or all of the following:

* Provide high‑level specialist legal and strategic advice to stakeholders, including the Minister and the agency’s Executive.

* Lead and manage staff, including oversight of performance, attendance, and initiatives that support health and wellbeing.

* Build staff capability through coaching, mentoring and effective succession planning.

* Provide strategic direction to the work area by developing business plans, setting priorities and strategies, and monitoring workflow and performance outcomes.

* Offer expert advice and guidance to staff undertaking legal work, manage escalated matters, and review and approve legal outputs prior to distribution to stakeholders.

* Lead and manage a caseload of legal matters, including high‑profile, sensitive and contentious cases.

* Deliver specialist legal, strategic and practical advice to support the development of the agency’s policies, processes and procedures.

* Oversee, review and provide advice on written materials, including briefs for external legal providers, and issue instructions throughout legal proceedings.

* Prepare complex and/or sensitive legal submissions, court documents and formal correspondence.

* Identify, assess, manage and report on legal risks across the agency, escalating issues to the Executive where required.

* Establish, maintain and manage key strategic relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.

* Represent and negotiate on behalf of the agency in cross‑agency, inter‑jurisdictional and other strategic forums to advance the agency’s interests.

* Analyse, review, evaluate and monitor legal information to support major projects, reforms and new business initiatives.

* Oversee quality assurance activities and promote high‑quality, well‑reasoned decision‑making within the work area.

* Develop and implement strategies, operational policies, procedures and organisational change initiatives.

* Drive innovation, lead and manage change, and actively contribute to delivering the agency’s strategic objectives.

* Represent the agency before courts and tribunals in matters involving significant and/or complex issues.

* Exercise delegations appropriate to the role in line with relevant legislation, policies and guidelines.
