Purpose of Role Environment Tasmania has created an exciting new role, with multi-year funding, designed to protect the states iconic freshwater environments and globally rare freshwater species.
According to Tasmanias State of the Environment Report ****, the condition of Tasmanias rivers is in decline.
Across the state, freshwater environments are being degraded due to over-abstraction, pollution, streambank erosion and climate change.
Having access to freshwater is vital for nearly all life on land.
Environment Tasmanias Freshwater Campaigner will co-design and deliver a state-wide campaign to improve the management and monitoring of Tasmanias freshwater environments as well as protection for the unique species that live in the states rivers, lakes and wetlands.
Through this campaign, the Freshwater Campaigner will educate the public, build alliances with stakeholders and raise the profile of threats facing the states freshwater ecosystems whilst providing government and industry with tangible solutions for recovery.
