The key duties of the position
The Role

An opportunity exists to join our dynamic and vibrant Defence team as an Explosive Ordnance Armaments Technician or Electronic Technician within our Explosive Ordnance Maintenance Directorate. This role is based at the Torpedo Maintenance Facility (TMF) HMAS Stirling, WA in the Department of Defence and involves technical maintenance, inspection and certification activities to ensure the safety, functionality, and readiness of guided weapon systems and explosive ordnance. The position is broadband, with opportunities for career growth and progression within the broadband.
There are 3 levels of maintenance authorities:
- Maintainer to Quality Verifier – APS4 Level
- Independent Inspector to Weapon Coordinator – APS5 Level
- Lead – APS6 Level (Supervisor)
Advancement requires ongoing training, online modules, on-the-job training, specialised training, and sitting Assessment Boards. The formal assessment of skills and proficiencies will determine eligibility for advancement and may include:
- Attend nominated training courses; or
- Participate in a merit selection process.
Employees may enter the broadband at any level subject to:
- Work value of duties and current proficiency and authorisations;
- Assessment of proficiencies and authorisations during the selection process;
- Previous Defence experience or similar highly regulated environments;
- Carrying out and certifying maintenance, safety, and technical tasks in accordance with regulations;
- Using technical data and publications to perform activities within explosive ordnance;
- Following policy and procedures in a regulated environment with audits and quality assurance;
- complying with WH&S; and technical regulatory requirements;
- Operating tools and equipment (hand tools, power tools, overhead crane) as required;
- Building positive team relationships and maintaining documentation and reports;
- Providing on-the-job training and mentoring for staff at APS5 level and above;
- Continuous personal progression within the broadband;
- Working with hazardous substances requiring specialised PPE and hot environments.
Note: This position will require access to US export controlled materiel and may require disclosure of dual citizenship. Further assessment may be conducted under ITAR.
Security Clearance: Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at Negative Vetting Level 1.
Mandatory Qualifications
EO Armament Technician: AQF Level 3–6 qualification in a relevant technical domain or equivalent skills/experience enabling attainment of a recognised AQF qualification if required.
EO Electronic Technician: AQF Level 4 qualification in a relevant technical domain or equivalent skills/experience enabling attainment of a recognised AQF qualification if required.

We are seeking candidates starting at APS4 level who will work towards progression through the broadband via on-the-job training. Desirable qualifications and capabilities include:
- Technical aptitude and drive to complete EO and maintenance training to meet KPIs and progress to APS6 level; existing qualified individuals or those with relevant experience may start at higher APS levels;
- Ability to prioritise, meet deadlines, and show initiative;
- Creative problem-solving using research and technical approaches;
- Adaptability and flexibility to meet stakeholder needs; ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- Ability to engage with stakeholders and robust verbal and written communication skills;
- 100% procedural compliance in maintenance;
- Willingness to sit maintenance authority boards to progress to the next level and to travel Australia-wide.
This role may require travel and is based on a 37.5-hour week (0630-1430, with no work-from-home).
