The role

Build skills as a public health practitioner with hands‐on experience. Support Aboriginal health through meaningful projects & strategies. Contribute to NSW Health's emergency response & surge capacity. Support Aboriginal health in WSLHD by developing skills, leading projects, and contributing to public health strategies and emergency response.

Employment Type: Permanent Full Time

Position Classification: Health Manager Level 1

Remuneration: $84,436 - $112,331 per annum

Hours Per Week: 38 (Job Share may be considered for part time hours)

Location: Cumberland Hospital

Where you'll be working

Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) is responsible for providing primary and secondary health care for people living in the Auburn, Blacktown, and The Hills Shire, Holroyd and Parramatta Local Government Areas (LGAs) and tertiary care to residents of the Greater Western Region. What you'll be doing

The role aims to build the capacity of the Aboriginal population health workforce in WSLHD. The APHO undertakes development as a public health practitioner and completes projects and activities to develop and implement population and public health strategies to protect and promote the health of people within WSLHD with a focus on Aboriginal populations. The role forms part of the public health emergency surge capacity for NSW Health during public health incidents.

Selection Criteria

  • This is an identified Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander position and, as such, applicants must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander in their local community and possess the requisite cultural knowledge. WSLHD considers that being Aboriginal is a genuine occupational qualification under Section 14 of the Anti‐Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in health or public health or demonstrated previous work experience in public health or a combination of study and work experience.
  • Sound knowledge of social, cultural, political and health issues affecting Aboriginal people, families and communities and demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of Aboriginal Health.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of current processes in communicable diseases, immunisation, infection control and environmental health.
  • Highly developed organisational skills, with a demonstrated ability to prioritise workload including for the team, meet conflicting deadlines and work independently and within a team.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to identify key messages, issues and concerns when communicating with others.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills and excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office suite and embedded office software.
  • Demonstrated excellent written skills particularly in history‐taking and interviewing and demonstrated excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to build rapport and hold difficult conversations with contacts over the phone.
  • Current NSW Class C drivers licence and willingness to use for work purposes.
