Senior Software Engineer |Energy Optimisation
We're partnering with a Silicon Valley-backed energy technology scale-up to build their new Melbourne engineering team as they expand across Australia's energy markets.
What We're Looking For:
You're a Software Engineer who builds optimisation systems that solve real-world, high-stakes problems. Your strength lies in developing production-grade algorithms for complex operational environments: mixed-integer programming, forecasting models, and control systems that run 24/7. You understand energy markets deeply, whether that's batteries, renewables, VPPs, or wholesale trading. You're pragmatic, results-focused, and thrive on seeing your work control live assets worth millions.
The Technical Essentials:
* Optimisation Expertise: 5+ years building mixed-integer linear and/or nonlinear optimisation models for high-dimensional, real-world problems
* Energy Sector Knowledge: Strong commercial experience in energy markets: batteries, virtual power plants, renewable energy, wholesale markets (NEM), energy policies/regulations, or grid systems
* Production Python: Professional software engineering standards, not just scripting. Your code runs in production controlling real assets
* Market Intelligence: Ability to act as market rules expert, staying current on NEM developments, regulatory changes, and wholesale market dynamics
* Attention to Detail: High precision mindset. Your algorithms directly impact revenue and grid stability
* Communication Skills: Ability to articulate complex technical concepts to stakeholders and collaborate across technical and commercial teams
What Makes You Stand Out:
* PhD in operations research, electrical engineering, computer science, statistics, economics, or related quantitative field
* Professional experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and agile development practices
* SQL proficiency with production databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL)
* Java experience alongside Python
* Client-facing skills and ability to translate technical work into business outcomes
* Experience with analytic dashboards and visualisation tools
The Opportunity:
This is a ground floor role with a well-funded international company establishing their Australian operations. You'll own algorithm performance across their fleet of operating energy projects, develop new features based on market data analysis, and help shape their local engineering function from the beginning. Local hours, hybrid Melbourne-based environment, serious equity component.
