ABOUT THE BUSINESS
Since 1991, Yorganop has been Western Australia's first Aboriginal foster care agency. Yorganop works in partnership with government agencies, Aboriginal families, and our community of carers to provide safe and secure care for Aboriginal children.
While the immediate safety and wellbeing of children is Yorganop's priority, they also have a bigger purpose – to nurture children to flourish, and to empower Aboriginal children and families to grow strong in themselves, their culture and their future. So, it isn't simply about ensuring no Aboriginal child is left without a loving home. It's also about helping every child fulfil their potential and thrive – socially, emotionally, and in life.
In order to achieve these goals Yorganop needs the best team in place and is currently recruiting for an Aboriginal Cultural Consultant (50D) to join our amazing team.

ABOUT THE ROLE
As the Aboriginal Cultural Consultant, you will provide specialist advice and cultural knowledge to the Department of Communities, which will enable a broader and more comprehensive scoping of family to identify culturally connected placements and enhance cultural support planning. In doing so, this position is to develop a sound understanding of child protection processes and a strong working relationship with the Department that is built on trust and respect.
* The position will also be responsible for managing intake of consultation requests from the Department.
* You will implement the Aboriginal Representative Organisations (ARO) pilot and be actively involved in the evaluation of the pilot program.
* You will be required to work collaboratively with the Department including being co-located at the Armadale District Office on a part-time basis.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Culture:
* Comprehensive knowledge of contemporary issues in Aboriginal culture, in the context of community service delivery.
* Extensive knowledge of Aboriginal families, kin, and connections to support finding family activities.
* Personally demonstrate through consistent behaviour, an understanding of, respect for and accordance with the principles of Aboriginal community control.
* Ensure that cultural protocols are observed and respected within the organisation.
* Ensure Yorganop's Cultural Framework is embedded into case management practice.
ARO Activities:
* Participate in collaborative meetings with the Department to identify and locate Aboriginal family members who can provide support and care to the child.
* Explore with families (when consent is given) their wishes and ideas for alternate care in a collaborative discussion with or without the Department.
* Provide formal and documented advice, which includes the importance of strong connection to Aboriginal culture, community and family when making decisions in the best interest of the child.
* Undertakes case contact notes and to complete appropriate documentation and other necessary administrative procedures.
* Provide regular reports and status updates to key stakeholders as required.
* Ensure all service actions are culturally appropriate, respectful, sensitive, and work to build relationships and connection with Aboriginal people and communities.
* Ensure a data-driven approach and work to ensure there is a high performing culture across the service.
* Develop, facilitate, and maintain partnerships across all stakeholders.
* Ensure that approaches to the service is person-centred, strengths-based, and trauma informed.
* Communicates the service's vision and directions to key internal and external stakeholders and undertakes a change management role in building the understanding of all stakeholders.
* Ensure flexibility in approach, adapting to changing needs as appropriate.
* Responsibility for upholding high standards relating to service delivery to ensure alignment with contractual requirements, therapeutic framework, service delivery models, and evidence-based practice.
* Respond to and resolve complaints
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
Essential criteria:
* Must identify as Aboriginal in accordance with the Equal Opportunity Act Section 50D.
* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, communities, families, children and young people.
* Demonstrated ability to share knowledge and grow other's understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture, communities, family systems, customs, and traditions.
* Ability to communicate and influence across various levels in an organisation
* High level of interpersonal skills and have the ability to engage and develop relationships easily.
* Adaptable and flexible.
* Strong time management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
* A positive, can-do approach to problem solving and the ability to negotiate and influence.
* Sound administrative skills.
Desirable criteria:
* Demonstrated experience in the child protection and out of home care area or equivalent.
* Experience in Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, or Non-for- profit, or government roles.
QUALIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
Essential:
* Desirable is a tertiary qualification relevant to the role, such as Social Work, Community Development, Behavioural Sciences or similar. Alternatively, 2 years' experience in a similar role
* Satisfactory National Police Clearance
* Satisfactory Working with Children (WWC) Check
* Satisfactory Department of Communities (DoC) Departmental Check (Departmental Record Check & Criminal Record Check)
* Current Drivers Licence and the ability to travel in response to organisational needs.
