Job Overview
Schutz Industries specializes in providing innovative solutions to the agricultural export sector. We design and manufacture machinery for hay exporters across Australia, building upon designs developed over the past 30+ years. We are seeking a long‑term team member to join our design department. This role offers comprehensive mentoring, beginning with familiarization of our existing systems, progressing to design responsibilities, and ultimately developing into a senior draftsperson position. This opportunity has arisen as our current designer is approaching retirement.
Key Responsibilities
* Prepare detailed mechanical drawings, assemblies, and part specifications using Autodesk CAD software, working from sketches, specifications, and verbal instructions from clients and co‑workers
* Create and modify 3D models and 2D drawings for manufacturing and assembly
* Ensure all designs comply with relevant Australian and international standards (AS, ISO)
* Take measurements and 3D model samples for modifications
* Produce bills of materials, assembly instructions, and technical documentation
* Maintain drawing management systems and version control
* Collaborate closely with engineers, fabricators, and project managers throughout the design and build process
* Conduct design reviews to identify potential manufacturing or assembly issues
* Assist with prototype development and design modifications based on testing feedback
Qualifications & Experience
* Experience with sheet metal design, welded structures, or machinery design would be valuable, as would knowledge of finite element analysis (FEA) or simulation tools
* Familiarity with product lifecycle management (PLM) systems and experience in your specific industry sector would be advantageous
* Previously trade qualified as a machinist or boilermaker welder

Salary: A$75,000–90,000 p/a
