Our dementia-friendly program provides a safe and inclusive environment where participants can take a break from their home routine, connect with others in their community, and enjoy a day of socialising and meaningful activities. The program also provides valuable respite for carers.
Based in our dementia-friendly space in Winnellie, and sometimes visiting local community locations such as parks, gardens, cafés, museums and galleries, the program offers engaging activities tailored to each individual using the principles of person-centred care.
**What the program offers participants**
- Participants enjoy a range of therapeutic and recreational activities in a supportive group setting, including:
- Arts and crafts
- Games and gentle sport
- Music and nostalgic activities
- Reading and reminiscing
- Outdoor activities and community outings
- Relaxation and social conversation
- Transport is provided to and from participants homes, helping make the program accessible for those attending.
**The impact youll make**
By volunteering with the Dementia Day Program, youll help create opportunities for people living with dementia to:
- Stay socially connected
- Feel included and supported
- Build confidence and wellbeing
- Remain living independently in their own homes and communities for longer
- What youll do as a volunteer
- Working alongside trained Dementia Australia staff, you may:
- Engage in friendly conversations with group members
- Help create a welcoming and inclusive group environment
- Support individuals to participate in activities
- Encourage social interaction within the group
- Share your own interests or skills (for example, crafts, music, games or storytelling)
- Assist with recreational activities and group engagement

**When you can volunteer**
The Dementia Day Program runs Monday to Friday, and volunteers can choose a day and time that suits their schedule. Even a few hours can make a big difference.

Ideally, volunteers can commit 24 hours per shift, with the program running from 10:00 am to approx 2:00 pm. Activities may take place at our Winnellie centre or at a pre-arranged community location within the Darwin and Palmerston area, where volunteers may meet the group on the day. In addition to supporting the Darwin team with activity planning and group engagement.
** Training **
To assist you to be confident with this role we provide flexible induction and orientation. Volunteers need to complete our flexible, online induction prior to starting the role.
