Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI) was Australia's first dedicated paediatric research facility and is now one of the world's most highly regarded independent medical research organisations.
Our research focuses on the four key areas impacting children's health: cancer, genomics and genetic diseases, neurobiology, and embryology.Work with a team of dedicated professionalsWe're looking for a talented Data Scientist/Bioinformatician to collaborate with leading medical researchers at Childrens Medical Research Institute and partner institutions.
In this dynamic role, you'll design experiments, build cutting-edge algorithms, and apply best-practice computational tools to transform complex clinical and experimental datasets into meaningful insights.You'll work hands-on with diverse data types—including single-cell transcriptomics, genomics, epigenomics, proteomics, and structural biology—helping uncover discoveries that could shape future research and clinical decision-making.
Youll also be embedded in a team of experienced bioinformaticians, fostering deep collaboration and continuous learning.
The appointment is for a full-time fixed term contract.
However part-time capacity may be considered for the right candidate.
You will:Contribute to activities that enhance the awareness, reputation, and standing of the Bioinformatics Facility.Assist in preparing grant applications for collaborative research projects, with approval from the Bioinformatics Leader and Head of Operations.Conduct and support research experiments and projects independently and as part of a team.Demonstrate scientific knowledge and technical expertise, with a commitment to continuous learning and development.Apply your expertise to a diverse range of projects and identify optimal solutions to research problems, collaborating with core facilities as needed.Prepare and report research data for documentation and presentations to the facility team and project stakeholders.Maintain accurate records and support the archiving of research data and shared resources.Support the Bioinformatics Leader with facility operations, administrative tasks, and adherence to CMRI policies and procedures.Contribute to the development and deployment of facility tools, technologies, and services, prioritising tasks as directed.Actively participate in facility and Institute scientific meetings.Engage in training activities alongside other team members.Collaborate with colleagues in other CMRI Core Facilities.Support the Bioinformatics Leader in improving quality management systems.Share knowledge and promote CMRI through seminars,Discovery Days, and similar events.A rewarding role in every wayFulltime role – 37.5 hours per weekExcellent not for profit tax benefitsA flexible and supportive work environment where everyone's contribution is highly valued.What can you bring to this role?
Hold at least an MSc and/or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Mathematics, Statistics, or possess equivalent experience.Have experience working in a professional research capacity with a strong focus on biomedical data analysis.Essential skills and experience:Creating and implementing bioinformatics pipelines/workflows on Linux, HPC, and/or cloud-based computing platforms.Data manipulation and exploratory data analysis using R or Python.Interpreting results from differential gene expression analysis, single-cell transcriptomics, and/or proteomics.Engaging with researchers and working across a wide range of multiomic datasets to address biomedical questions.Ability to formulate impactful research questions and carry projects through to high-quality completion and reporting.Experience with machine learning applications in biomedical research.Desirable skills and experience:Use of cutting-edge approaches for analysing high-dimensional and multi-omics data.Familiarity with pathway enrichment and network analysis.Analysis of long-read sequencing data.Mathematical modelling and statistical methods suited for high-dimensional datasets.Strong problem-solving abilities and independent thinking.Proven experience communicating findings through scientific papers and conference presentations.High-level interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
