The Corporate Legal Branch within the General Counsel Division is part of a specialist in-house legal practice that supports the department's objectives by advising on the management of legal risk.
**The branch is made up of 3 sections**:
- Commercial Law Team - provide advice and legal assistance on a variety of commercial matters, including advising on significant procurements and drafting bespoke contracts to meet the needs of the department in supporting veterans.
- Information Law - provide legal advice relating to matters regarding information access and privacy, including supporting the department's Privacy Champion
- Legislation & Instruments - work collegiately across many areas of the department in order to develop primary and subordinate legislation, appointment instruments and business delegations.
**Duties**
APS 5 and 6 Legal Officers generally operate under direction from Senior Legal Officers and undertake legal work with moderate supervision, the extent of which is dependent upon complexity of legal work and experience. They are expected to understand, support and promote the objectives of the department, and consider this environmental context in the work that they undertake.
- Deliver high quality legal services that meet client expectations, taking into consideration legal and non-legal risks, and the role that the department and the Minister play under the portfolio legislation.
- Preparation, drafting and review of moderately complex legal documents, seeking guidance and advice when required.
- Develop and maintain client relationships with business areas and promote the General Counsel Division as the department's trusted advisor.
- Further develop professional legal expertise, through participation in development, training and study opportunities, and meet Continuing Legal Education requirements and other expectations.
- Support leadership of the Team and the Branch, including through promoting a positive working environment, and contributing to corporate leadership activities.
**Eligibility**
- Must have at least a Bachelor of Laws degree (or equivalent) from a recognised Australian tertiary education provider.
- Must be admitted as a legal practitioner of the High Court or the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia and must possess, or be eligible to obtain, a practising certificate.
- Must hold a baseline security clearance or be willing and eligible to undergo a clearance process.

A merit pool will be established that may be used to fill similar positions (ongoing and non-ongoing) within the next 18 months.
