Overview
An exciting opportunity is available for an APS5 Microbiologist to join a specialised laboratory team within a federal government environment. This role supports critical public health outcomes through laboratory testing, scientific analysis and regulatory compliance activities.
About the Team
The broader laboratory function is responsible for post-market monitoring, compliance testing, investigations and scientific assessment of therapeutic goods. The team contributes to national and international standards, provides expert scientific advice and supports regulatory decision-making.
Within this, the Microbiology team focuses on assessing and monitoring the microbiological quality of medicines, biologicals and medical devices.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct, analyse and report on laboratory testing of therapeutic goods to ensure compliance with quality standards
* Support investigations relating to public health and safety concerns
* Prepare and draft laboratory reports for review and approval
* Assist in developing and validating new testing methods
* Maintain accurate laboratory records in line with quality and accreditation requirements
* Contribute to the development of SOPs, testing manuals, and continuous improvement initiatives
* Manage laboratory inventory and liaise with suppliers to maintain stock levels
* Provide technical input into the evaluation of manufacturing and labelling processes
* Review and assess scientific data submitted by stakeholders and make evidence-based recommendations
* Train and support team members in laboratory techniques and processes
Key Requirements
* Australian citizenship is essential
* A degree in Science or equivalent, with a major in microbiology, from an Australian tertiary institution or comparable overseas qualification is mandatory.
* Knowledge of microbiological analytical techniques and testing protocols
* Experience or understanding of data analysis and statistical methods
* Familiarity with laboratory quality management systems (e.g. ISO 17025)
* Strong attention to detail with a commitment to high-quality, accurate work
* Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report writing
* Ability to work collaboratively and build positive working relationships
* Capacity to interpret and apply regulatory standards and guidelines
* Sound judgement and decision-making skills based on scientific data
