Overview
Avant Law is a national specialist law firm seeking a Senior Associate to join our civil litigation team in Brisbane. The role is permanent, full‐time, and works under the leadership of the Legal Team Manager. It offers a hybrid work arrangement within a team of purpose‐driven lawyers focused on defending medical practitioners.
Key Responsibilities
* Independently manage a diverse civil litigation file load of varying complexity, consistently meeting KPIs and billing targets while delivering high quality, member‐focused legal services to Avant Mutual.
* Deliver sustainable, timely and efficient legal services to achieve the best possible outcomes for both Avant and the individual practitioner member, reducing cycle times, accurate reserves and external legal costs.
* Prepare and manage medical negligence claims under the Personal Injuries Proceedings Act 2002 (Qld) and civil litigation files, adhering to claims and solicitor protocols and contributing to the delivery of a superior, comprehensive legal service.
* Provide oral and written legal advice to Avant members, practices and Avant Claims Managers concerning medical negligence/civil claims.
* Represent members in courts, tribunals, commissions and/or inquiries.
* Assist the Legal Team Manager – Civil Law Team in supervising and mentoring junior solicitors and coordinating the work of the team.
Success Criteria
* Demonstrated post‐admission experience (ideally 5+ years) in medical negligence litigation, preferably on the defendant side.
* Extensive experience in civil litigation or adjacent fields (e.g., personal injuries) with minimal supervision.
* Relevant tertiary legal qualifications.
* Eligible to hold an unsupervised practising certificate as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and the High Court of Australia.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong prioritisation, time‐management and self‐management skills.
* Ability to mentor and support junior team members.
* Good computer literacy and competency to work in an electronic document management environment.
