Senior Ranger (Biosecurity/Health Checks)
Excellent Barrier Reef and Marine Parks (GBR∓) Region are excited to share an incredible opportunity for a AO5 Senior Ranger (Biosecurity/Health Checks) to join the team on a Permanent basis.
As one of the six regions of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the GBR∓ Region delivers conservation and management activities across land and sea including implementing the Reef Joint Field Management Program in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Additionally, the Region oversees the state's southern marine parks - Great Sandy Marine Park and Moreton Bay Marine Park.
As a member of the Technical Support team, this role contributes to the management of national parks and protected islands within the Great Barrier Reef and Marine Parks Region, along with Commonwealth islands. You will coordinate, develop, and implement region‑wide island monitoring plans, including writing and overseeing research strategies and supporting the delivery of “health checks” to assess key environmental values. You will mentor and guide field staff, ensure biosecurity protocols are applied, and collaborate with planners, Traditional Owners, and stakeholders to deliver monitoring priorities that support adaptive management and conservation outcomes across remote island environments.
Role focus:
- Coordinate, develop, and implement region‑wide island monitoring and research programs, including “health checks” to assess key environmental values.
- Mentor and support field staff, ensuring effective delivery of monitoring programs and adherence to biosecurity protocols.
- Collaborate with planning teams, QPWS senior staff, Traditional Owners, and stakeholders to guide adaptive management and conservation priorities.
- Contribute to conservation land management through practical experience in managing pests, native species, and fire, while maintaining productive working relationships and fostering engagement.
The role involves physically demanding activities, requiring good fitness, initiative, and a positive, enthusiastic attitude. Based in Cairns, Townsville, Airlie Beach, Yeppoon, or Gladstone, staff may be required to travel to other locations, including remote sites, overnight stays, and travel by sea or light aircraft.
To be considered you must hold the following qualifications:
- An automatic/unrestricted manual driver's licence.
- There are no mandatory qualifications required for this role. However, formal qualifications in an environmental/ecology field would be highly regarded.
