About the role
This Research Technician role will be part of the Mammalian Infectious Diseases Research (MIDR) team at CSIRO's Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) and will support critical research into emergency animal diseases. In this hands‐on laboratory role, you will assist scientists by preparing and processing samples, performing routine laboratory analyses and supporting virology and molecular biology experiments, including work related to immunological assays. Your work will contribute to a better understanding of viral pathogenesis and support the development of improved diagnostic and vaccine options for diseases such as African swine fever, lumpy skin disease and Japanese encephalitis.
Responsibilities
* Working in a microbiologically secure laboratory as part of a multi‐disciplinary team with responsibilities and outputs, supporting and delivering research activities and projects.
* Designing and performing straightforward experiments and routine laboratory analyses.
* Conducting literature reviews, laboratory‐based experiments and activities, including associated analysis possibly involving statistical or graphics software.
* Undertaking tasks under technical direction of the team leader and senior scientists, working with discretion to decide on the timing of operations within the work team's plan and plan ahead to meet experimental and/or project demands and milestones.
* Providing general laboratory support for housekeeping and maintenance activities.

Qualifications and experience
* A tertiary qualification in biological sciences or other relevant laboratory work experience.
* Technical competence in virology and/or molecular biology, e.g. virus infectivity assays, cell culture, animal sample processing and PCRs.
* The ability to work both independently and cooperatively as a member of a larger project team, and to form and maintain effective and respectful relationships with a range of colleagues and collaborators.
* Experience in conducting and coordinating laboratory‐based experiments or tests, including planning and implementation.
* A high level of interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills including the ability to document results and communicate effectively with colleagues to meet project goals and timelines.
* The ability and willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches in support of scientific investigations.
