About The Role

The Sector Coupling Analyst contributes to high-quality medium- to long-term forecasts of electricity and gas demand, with a focus on CER and emerging molecular fuels. With strong programming skills, the Analyst applies a range of forecasting techniques—including machine learning, statistical, econometric, and engineering-based methods—to generate insights that inform strategic decisions.

The role involves clear documentation and communication of analytical work to support internal collaboration and the production of stakeholder-facing materials such as public presentations and publications.

As a collaborative team member and strategic thinker, the Analyst brings new ideas, researches market trends, and contributes to scenario development. They interpret complex information to understand evolving industry sectors, especially during disruptive change, and engage with internal and external stakeholders to develop robust forecasts and advice.

This is a 12 month fixed term contract position covering a leave position.

What You Will Be Doing

* Apply intermediate R (or Python) skills to clean, transform, visualise data sets, refine forecasting models and produce clear, reproducible analysis
* Conduct quality checks
* Communicate via graphs, oral reports, written reports and presentations
* Perform research, guided by more senior team members
* Plan own work and effectively report status.

Dimensions of the position

* Apply economic theory, behavioural economics, and modelling techniques to build and test forecasts for consumer demand in gas and electricity
* Develop clear, publication-ready technical and business reports that explain complex analysis in simple, accessible terms
* Communicate forecasting methods and outcomes effectively to both internal and external stakeholders
* Analyse market and industry developments to identify issues affecting the energy sector and enhance AEMO’s forecasting services
* Contribute to continuous improvement by offering constructive feedback and supporting team development initiatives.

What You Will Bring To The Role

Education

* Bachelor in quantitative field, or higher. Statistical knowledge well regarded.

Experience and Knowledge

* Awareness of energy markets
* Commercial thinking, business case development
* Prior work experience in gas and/or electricity sector
* Strong quantitative analysis capability utilising databases and spreadsheets to design and run data analysis.
* Sound knowledge of energy market principles, NEM, WEM, or gas markets dispatch process, generator behaviour, network constraints, and power system operation.
