Primary objective
The Aboriginal Practice Advisor is a highly experienced professional who is able to demonstrate a commitment to providing
culturally safe and appropriate practice advice that strengthens school and agency cultural competency, including building
education engagement practice capability that is responsive to the needs of Aboriginal students, families and communities.

Context statement
Engagement Programs, Performance and Reporting is responsible for developing strategic, evidence-based, and data-informed
initiatives to support priority students, and students at risk of disengaging from education, with place-based approaches that are
culturally appropriate, and trauma informed.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Lead, implement and develop an education engagement practice framework through support and training to staff to enhance

practice, professional judgement and decision making in policy and practice matters and complex case management issues.
2. Identify and promote evidence based best practice service delivery in accordance with education legislation and policy.
3. Develop and implement cultural learning, coaching and mentoring strategies that assist staff in providing high level services to

Aboriginal children and their families that is consistent with departmental policy and NT education legislation.
4. Lead and develop professional development strategies, including mentoring, coaching, practice reflection and induction in

collaboration with regional and leadership teams.
5. Build productive working relationships and provide support and advice regarding networking with Aboriginal stakeholders,

nongovernment organisations and the local community to enhance collaborative engagement practices with Aboriginal children,
families and the community.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated ability to lead, coach and guide staff professional development to apply culturally safe and responsive practice

with Aboriginal children, families and the community.
2. Demonstrated significant experience, skills and knowledge in complex case management in human services, with a sound

understanding of contemporary statutory education, child protection and youth justice practice.
3. Demonstrated ability to provide effective leadership and advice on issues involving services to Aboriginal children and the

ability to provide related training, coaching and mentoring to a range of administrative corporate and school-based staff.
4. Demonstrated high level of oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to effectively negotiate

outcomes, facilitate complex meetings, resolve conflict and the ability to develop effective working relationships with internal
and external stakeholders.

5. Demonstrated organisational skills and ability to initiate, develop, maintain, and manage education and training programs.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of cultural issues, family and community dynamics, relationships and complexities,
as well as the political sensitivities of Aboriginal communities.

6. Established local cultural knowledge, respect, and safety at the community level.

Desirable
1. Relevant qualifications (e.g., degree in Community Services, Social Work, Community Development)
2. Experience working with Aboriginal people from remote communities.
