The Role
The APS 6 Senior Security Advisor is accountable under limited direction to perform and achieve complex protective security work and deliver business outcomes for the Navy Intelligence and Information Warfare (NI&IW) Branch. The APS 6 Senior Security Advisor is accountable to have and maintain a well-developed understanding of and compliance to relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements.
The role works in a small team environment and involves high collaboration and engagement with stakeholders to develop and help implement Security policies within NI&IW Branch.
* The Senior Security Advisor role is part of the After Hours duty on call roster, for which an additional allowance applies when this duty is scheduled.
* Between the Senior Security Advisor and Security Advisor are, where possible, they are to work their standard 7.5 hour day between 7.00 AM to 5.00 PM. This means one will AM and PM and the other will AM and PM.
* Facilitating security training and awareness sessions to support the protective security needs of Defence.
* Providing protective security advice, based on policy and legislative requirements, to achieve appropriate security controls and decision making.
* Assist with or conduct of reviews, assessments and investigations to achieve protective security objectives.
* Performing procedural/administrative support (e.g. security reporting, managing the security inbox and maintenance of security assets).
* Assist with managing Protective Security Zones 4, 5 and Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF).
* Act as NI&IW’s lead Communications Security Officer (COMSO) for all SCIF related tasks.
* Maintaining and confirming security clearance levels and access requirements for NI&IW Branch members, as well as for invited guests/visitors.
* Support information management practices and perform functions as a Records Management Work Group Coordinator.
* Manage the work with the Security.

The Branch focuses on the key inputs of people, policies and products to assist in realising Navy’s Intelligence and Information Warfare objectives. It is an exciting time to join the Branch as we strive to support next generation capabilities and new platforms out to 2030 and beyond. The Branch structure consists of nine directorates, plus the Executive team and employs an integrated workforce; most are Navy personnel, supported by a smaller number of Australian Public Service and contractor personnel.
The workforce has approximately 70 personnel; however, the Branch is growing rapidly. The APS 6 Senior Security Advisor is located within the Branch Operations Directorate, comprising a small team, with APS and Navy personnel. The team facilities enabling services on behalf of NI&IW Branch including finance, procurement, security, information management and workforce management functions.
