We are seeking a skilled Animal Care Specialist to join our team at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual with a passion for animal care, committed to progressing their career in the laboratory animal field.
The successful candidate will work as part of a skilled and dedicated animal care team who use the latest technology in housing and equipment to provide support for research into cardiac disease and development. The role involves providing professional care for all animal species, including mice and rats, as well as duties in the aquarium housing zebrafish and aquatic frogs.
This is a permanent, full-time role on a 6-day rotating roster, therefore availability on some weekends and public holidays is required to ensure the continuity of care for animals in the facility.
Responsibilities
* Provide professional animal care including provision of food, water and clean housing materials.
* Manage breeding colonies and liaise with researchers to optimise the health and welfare of animals under study.
* Maintain and operate washing and sterilising equipment and ensure compliance with regulations concerning animal ethics, gene technology, quarantine, and Work, Health & Safety.
* Accurately record keeping and administrative responsibilities, such as breeding, sample submission and animal usage.
* Assist research staff with animal issuance, handling and experimental procedures as directed by senior BioCORE staff.
* Restock consumables and maintain procedure rooms.
* Perform euthanasia, as required.
Requirements
* Tertiary qualifications in animal science, animal technology, biological science, vet nursing, animal husbandry or a related field.
* Ability to work individually and as part of a team.
* Strong time management.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to interact and maintain good relationships with diverse members of an organisation.
* Genuine interest in working with rodents/small animals with a caring approach.
* Experience working in an aquarium environment would be advantageous.
* Availability on weekends and public holidays.
* Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency.
