The CBA technology unit is at the forefront of digital banking, delivering innovative services and robust infrastructure to Commonwealth Bank customers and supporting over 53,000 staff with leading workplace technology. The unit oversees digital delivery, analytics, security, and business resilience for all divisions. As part of the Group's Digital and Customer Crew within the CommSec Practice, the Staff Software Engineer will play a pivotal role in Australia's largest online retail stockbroker, CommSec. This high‐visibility platform supports a diverse investor base and employs a range of technologies. The role involves working with a high‐performing, multi‐level team of software engineers, consulting on product and feature design, and providing support to deliver key products and solutions. Engineers at CommSec gain exposure to top‐tier IT systems and are encouraged to grow their careers across multiple areas within the broader CBA network.
We're interested in hearing from people who
* Champion best practices in web and backend development, including architecture, testing, CI/CD, and performance optimisation.
* Collaborate with cross‐functional teams to deliver high‐impact features and improvements to the CommSec platform.
* Drive technical strategy and architectural decisions across Web and backend systems, ensuring scalability, maintainability, and security.
* Promote a culture of innovation, inclusion, and psychological safety within the team.
* Partner with stakeholders across product, design, and operations to align on goals and deliver exceptional customer outcomes.
Tech skills
We work with a wide range of technologies. Experience with the following (or similar) will set you up for success:
* Frontend: Deep expertise in TypeScript and React, building large‐scale frontend platforms
* Backend: Strong C# / .NET Core backend experience designing and running production APIs
* Databases: Hands‐on experience with MySQL, emerging PostgreSQL work, and Redis caching strategies
* Proven system design and architecture leadership across multiple services or teams
* Cloud & Infrastructure: AWS is preferred, with experience in Azure and GCP also
* A strong reliability and observability mindset, including post‐incident learning
* A security‐first, risk‐aware approach to engineering in regulated environments
* End‐to‐end ownership of systems including CI/CD, Docker/Kubernetes, and production operations
* Testing: Unit, integration, contract, and E2E testing frameworks
o Proficiency in monitoring, alerting, and performance tuning for both web and backend systems
o Ability to drive operational excellence and ensure high availability and reliability of mission‐critical services
