Psychiatrists – Outreach Opportunities (Central West NSW)
Rural Doctors Network is seeking Psychiatrists to support multiple outreach locations across Central West NSW within the Central West Aboriginal Mental Health and Wellbeing Program. Opportunities are flexible, with expressions of interest welcomed for one or more locations. Each site has unique needs, but a general model includes monthly face-to-face consultations and telehealth support as required.

Key responsibilities include:

Psychiatric assessment and diagnostic clarification
Medication management
Collaborative clinical support alongside Aboriginal Health Workers/Practitioners, mental health workers, psychologists, GPs, and allied health teams
This is a rewarding opportunity to provide culturally safe, person-centred care in rural communities.
Renumeration is competitive and travel expenses are included for in-person consultations.

About the Central West NSW Aboriginal Mental Health and Wellbeing Program
This program addresses critical service gaps in trauma-informed mental health and alcohol and other drug (AOD) services for Aboriginal people in Central West NSW.

It aims to implement a genuinely co-designed, culturally safe, holistic, and Aboriginal-led model of mental health and wellbeing care across the region. The program's development has been driven by strong partnerships between:

Local Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs)
The Western NSW Local Health District's Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Unit and Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Unit
With support from the NSW Ministry of Health

Program's Guiding Principles

Trust and cultural respect
Recognition of the cultural values and traditions of Aboriginal communities
Holistic approaches to the health of Aboriginal people
Recognition of the valuable and unique role of Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations
Partnership of Aboriginal people at all levels of health service delivery and management
Recognition of the contribution the health system can make to the social determinants of health and the clinical outcomes for Aboriginal People

Locations within partnership seeking psychiatry services

Weigelli Centre Aboriginal Corporation – Cowra NSW
Weigelli is a residential Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) rehabilitation facility offers a 12-week program focused on reducing the impact of substance use while providing a safe, culturally supportive space for healing for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. The program includes one-on-one casework, care planning, AOD education, social and emotional wellbeing support, and cultural and vocational activities, with detox required prior to entry. In addition to rehabilitation, the centre offers medical, dental, legal, parenting, and housing support, though access to psychiatric care remains a significant gap despite a visiting mental health nurse.

Condobolin Aboriginal Health Service– Condobolin NSW
This service provides comprehensive primary health care, including GPs, Aboriginal health workers, nurses, and a range of visiting specialists such as cardiology, ENT, nephrology, and physiotherapy, along with dental care and dietetics. The Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) Hub offers mental health support, including a fortnightly visiting mental health nurse who is well-received by clients. Additional supports include legal assistance linkages, the ITC program, and the Ironbark Program. The community expressing a preference for a mixed model of psychiatric care over telehealth alone.

Orange Aboriginal Medical Service – Orange NSW
Providing services to the Central West community for over 20 years, this organisation operates across six locations and offers a wide range of holistic health and wellbeing services. These include a medical clinic with GPs, nurses, Aboriginal Health workers, visiting specialists (including a psychiatrist with limited capacity), a dental clinic, a growing physical wellness centre, and a dedicated Holistic Healing Centre (SEWB). Additional programs span NDIS and healthy ageing, out-of-home care, early years support, and OAMS is actively seeking additional psychiatry support, particularly for their SEWB centre addressing complex health and AOD needs.

Yoorana Gunya Family Healing Aboriginal Corporation – Forbes NSW
Yoorana Gunya provides a wide range of culturally safe, holistic health and wellbeing services for Aboriginal people, including primary medical care, visiting specialists, and dedicated support through the SEWB team, family support workers, and a family violence specialist. Programs also include the ITC program, mental health first aid training, community wellbeing activities like yarning and walking groups, teen boxing, and the Walan Marra Ngayiny Healing Van – a mobile healing service.

Current AHPRA registration (or eligible to apply).
RANZCP Fellowship (Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists).
Or RANZCP Fellowship Trainee with supervisor support.
Or Rural Generalist with mental health advanced skill.
