This is a rare opportunity to lead one of Australia's most high-performing public education systems at a time of significant reform and renewal.
As Deputy Director-General, you will have system-wide responsibility for the delivery and reform of public education across the ACT, serving more than 50,000 students across 93 public schools and 77 preschools, spanning early childhood, primary, secondary, senior secondary and specialist education.
Reporting directly to the Director-General, the role leads school operations and reform implementation across the ACT public education system. This includes responsibility for large-scale service delivery, school improvement, teaching and learning policy, inclusive education, student wellbeing, and the delivery of Closing the Gap priority reforms.
This is a senior executive leadership role of real scale and consequence. You will be accountable for translating government policy and national reform agendas into practical, high-quality outcomes in classrooms and schools, while ensuring strong governance, risk management and system accountability.
The challenge
The ACT has the highest average levels of educational achievement in Australia — and the expectation is to go further. The Deputy Director-General plays a pivotal role in:
* leading major education reforms at system scale
* driving consistent improvement across diverse school settings
* strengthening inclusive education and equity outcomes
* supporting and developing school leaders and educators
* engaging constructively with unions, families, communities and government, and
* advising Ministers and contributing to Cabinet-level decision-making.
The role
You will lead complex, multi-disciplinary functions and large, geographically dispersed teams, working closely with school leaders and senior executives to ensure reform is delivered with pace, integrity and impact. As a member of the Directorate's senior executive, you will also contribute to whole-of-Directorate strategy, governance and performance.
The person
This role will suit a seasoned senior executive with:
* demonstrated experience leading large-scale service delivery systems
* a strong track record in reform execution, not just policy design
* credibility with Ministers and senior stakeholders
* a collaborative, values-driven leadership style, and
* sound judgement, political acuity and a strong sense of public accountability,
This role requires substantial senior leadership experience within an education system, combined with the ability to lead complex organisations through sustained reform. Success will depend on maintaining a strong focus on people, educational outcomes and equity, while delivering reform at system scale.
If you are motivated by public purpose, system leadership and the opportunity to shape the future of education for an entire jurisdiction, this is a role of rare scope and influence.
