Primary Objectives:
Provide support to parliamentary committees, including research, analysis, report writing and
other services to assist in the conduct of inquiries.
Context Statement:
The Department of the Legislative Assembly provides the Northern Territory Legislative
Assembly, its Members and Committees with quality and timely support for the operation of
the Parliament, Parliamentary Committees, the Parliament House precinct, and Electorate
Offices (and staff).
The Committee Office, which is part of the Parliamentary Support Division, supports and
promotes the democratic institution of Parliament through the provision of administrative,
procedural and logistical support to parliamentary committees.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Support the conduct of parliamentary committee inquiries.
2. Assist with the development and management of programs of inquiry for committees,
including clarifying issues and scope, and identifying information and evidence needs and
sources.
1. Undertake research and analysis of issues relevant to committee inquiries, including
providing summaries of submissions and other evidence.
1. Develop policy options for matters under inquiry for the consideration of the committee.
2. Draft reports for committees, including recommendations for the Assembly.
3. Assist in arrangements for inquiries, including hearings, meetings and inspections.
4. Provide assistance to the Library and Research team, including research and analysis on
subject matter requested by Members of the Legislative Assembly, jurisdictional
comparisons of legislation, and preparing reports and briefing notes.
Selection Criteria:
Essential:
1. Demonstrated high-level research, analytical and report-writing skills.
2. Ability to work unsupervised and with attention to detail to undertake research tasks and
to find and disseminate accurate and concise information to stakeholders.
3. Highly developed organisational skills and the ability to plan and complete projects within
defined timelines.
4. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact effectively
with people of diverse cultures and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and
stakeholders.
1. Proven ability to respect and adhere to the requirements of confidentiality, impartiality and
integrity.
1. Understanding of public policy and the operation of government.
Desirable:
1. Relevant tertiary qualifications.
2. Experience in, or an understanding of, the provision of secretariat support to parliamentary
committees or similar bodies.
Requirements for Selection and Undertaking the Role:
• Prior to being formally offered a position with the Department of the Legislative Assembly,
applicants will be required to submit a pre-employment declaration which includes
information regarding their criminal history, conflict of interest and other continuing
employment or volunteer work.
* The successful applicant will be subject to a criminal history check. A criminal history will
not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is a relevant criminal history.
* Access to recreation leave will be restricted during Parliamentary sitting periods.
* The position is based at Parliament House; however, it may require interstate travel and
travel throughout the Northern Territory, including to remote regions, depending on the
nature of committee inquiries being supported.
* The right to disconnect – This position is not expected to be available for regular
work-related contact outside of normal work hours.
