About the opportunity

The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) is seeking a Senior Lecturer in Physical Oceanography to join their team.

This position will provide high‑quality research and scientific leadership in physical oceanography, in alignment with the IMAS research strategy. Its core purpose is to strengthen the links between our blue‑water and climate research and the variability of near‑shore physical and biogeochemical processes across Australia's marine territory.

Initial collaborations will be centred within the Centre for Oceans, Ice and Climate, with opportunities to build partnerships across the IMAS Centres for Ecology and Biodiversity, and Fisheries and Aquaculture, as well as with CSIRO's coastal hydrodynamic and biogeochemical modelling team and the new ARC Centre of Excellence for Our Future Oceans. These collaborations are expected to support co‑supervision of new research higher‑degree students.

The role also includes delivering undergraduate and potentially postgraduate teaching in physical oceanography and climate science, including occasional teaching in China, as well as contributing to broader university service responsibilities.

Visa sponsorship and relocation assistance may be considered for the right candidate.

What you'll do:

* Undertake scholarly undergraduate, and potentially postgraduate, coursework teaching of an exemplary quality.
* Conduct high‑quality research with national and growing international impact, contribute to securing external competitive funding, publish research findings, and contribute to the supervision of PhD and/or Master's students.
* Foster and sustain meaningful collaborations across local and national networks, including academic disciplines, professional sectors, relevant industries, and the broader community.

What we're looking for:

* A PhD, or equivalent, in Physical Oceanography.
* Experience in coastal oceanography, and the understanding of ocean dynamics relevant to Australia or Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.
* Demonstrated skills in quantitative analysis of large datasets and/or ocean modelling.
* Knowledge of marine biogeochemistry
* Experience in University-level teaching and learning.
* Experience in successful research higher degree supervision.
* A strong record of leading research that is recognised nationally and, ideally, internationally, demonstrated through high‑quality publications, conference presentations, and success in securing competitive external funding.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level C and will have a total remuneration package of up to $184,076 comprising base salary within the range of $138,536 to $157,330 plus 17% superannuation.
