Ecologist – Queensland
Australia‑Wide Projects
Fauna Works Environmental
Fauna Works Environmental is seeking an experienced Ecologist to join our Queensland‑based team and support projects across Australia. If you enjoy fieldwork, value high‑quality science, and want to contribute to meaningful conservation outcomes, this role offers the chance to grow your skills while working in diverse landscapes and ecosystems.
About Us
Fauna Works Environmental is an independent ecological consultancy delivering fauna management services, ecological surveys, biodiversity assessments, habitat restoration, and practical conservation solutions. We work with government, industry, and community organisations, and we're known for our integrity, technical capability, and commitment to supporting ecologists to develop professionally. As our project portfolio expands, we're looking for an Ecologist who is motivated, adaptable, and ready to contribute to a wide range of field and reporting tasks.
The Role
You will work closely with senior ecologists and project leads to deliver ecological assessments and field programs throughout Queensland and interstate.
Your responsibilities will include:
• Planning and conducting flora and fauna surveys in line with relevant guidelines
• Collecting accurate field data, specimens, and digital records
• Completing fieldwork safely and professionally under Fauna Works Environmental and client H&S procedures
• Preparing ecological reports and contributing to complex deliverables such as BDARs, stewardship assessments, and state‑specific approvals
• Supporting project managers with logistics, scheduling, and budget tracking
• Participating in ongoing training and mentoring to strengthen your ecological and technical skills
This role suits someone who enjoys fieldwork, communicates clearly, and is committed to producing high‑quality ecological outcomes.
About You
We're seeking an ecologist who brings a balance of field capability, technical understanding, and a willingness to learn. You will ideally have:
• A degree in ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, or a related field (or be working towards one with strong experience)
• 3–5+ years' experience in ecological consulting
• Strong flora and fauna identification skills, ideally within QLD and/or NSW ecosystems
• Experience conducting vegetation assessments, using botanical keys, and performing targeted threatened species surveys
• Understanding of state and federal environmental legislation, or a strong desire to build this knowledge
• Experience delivering ecological projects for public and/or private clients
• Professional recognition through accreditation, certification, or industry involvement
A positive attitude, strong communication skills, and the ability to work safely and independently in the field are essential.
What We Offer
Fauna Works Environmental is committed to supporting our team through:
• Mentoring from experienced ecologists, including BAM‑accredited practitioners
• Competitive salary and benefits
• Flexible working arrangements
• A supportive, friendly, and collaborative team culture
• Professional development support, including training and study assistance
• Opportunities to contribute to community and conservation initiatives
• Recognition programs and performance‑based rewards
• Support for professional memberships
