About the role

The Manager Legal and Governance is a senior leadership position within the City of Hobart, responsible for driving excellence in legal and governance functions. Reporting to the Director - Corporate Services, this role leads the Legal and Governance Group and manages a team of four professionals.

You will be employed in a fixed-term arrangement (5 years) with full-time hours. Classification: Municipal Officer Level 7A. Agreement: Hobart City Council Enterprise Agreement 2024. Salary range: $169,306 to $176,798 per annum (Inclusive of 13% contract loading) and 13.5% superannuation. Location: Town Hall. Privileges include private use of a motor vehicle and a car park.

Key responsibilities include:

* Provide authoritative legal and governance advice on the Local Government Act 1993 and other legislation relevant to the City's operations.
* Lead and manage the City's legal operations, including engagement and supervision of external counsel.
* Oversee governance frameworks, including Council meeting processes, statutory compliance, and policy reviews.
* Manage strategic property transactions, leases, licences, and contracts.
* Support elected members and senior executives, including dispute resolution and high-level governance guidance.
* Act as the City's Right to Information Officer and ensure compliance with statutory obligations.
* Champion continuous improvement, innovation, and a high-performance culture within the team.
* Build strong stakeholder relationships across the organisation and with external partners.

This is a high-level role suited to a dynamic leader with extensive experience in legal and governance, strong strategic thinking, and the ability to influence at the highest levels.

Qualifications and requirements

* Bring senior-level experience across local government, commercial and property law, proven leadership of high-performing teams, and exceptional communication skills.
* A Tasmanian Working with Vulnerable People registration and a Driver's Licence are required.
* LLB and admission to the Supreme Court of Tasmania, supported by meaningful post-admission experience, are highly considered.
